The retired wrestler Hulk Hogan was awarded $115 million in damages on Friday by a Florida jury in an invasion of privacy case against Gawker.com over its publication of a sex tape.

The wrestler, known in court by his legal name, Terry G. Bollea, sobbed as the verdict was announced in late afternoon, according to people in the courtroom. The jury had considered the case for about six hours.

Nick Denton, the founder of Gawker and a defendant in the case, was found personally liable, as was Albert J. Daulerio, the site’s former editor in chief.

Thoughts?

So can they nail them for anything else? I wouldn't much mind someone like this being in prison.

I applaud the ruling. Unless a fine is seriously damaging, it will never be a deterrent to future offenders.

What the hell. Erin Andrews got $55 million for some perv making a blurry video of her walking around nude in a hotel and now this?
I hope the husband of the woman he was screwing gets to sue Hogan for $115 million.

When I was 4 years old in the mid 50's I was in a head on car collision when the other car crossed the white line and hit us at 60 mph. Broke both my legs and cut me up.
It went to court and they rewarded me some money for my suffering. The money was put in a trust that I could get at age 21.
At age 21 years old I came home from the service and got my $1,500. Fifteen hundred dollars for breaking a 4 year old's legs and Hogan is rewarded like this for screwing around.

Nobody made huge profits by deliberately causing your auto accident.

Good point I guess. Would love to find out how much Gawkers made on the Hogan video and also how much the hotel made on the Erin Andrews video.

Somehow I doubt if either made 100 millions of dollars.

And the jury is not done with Gawker yet..........

They are scheduled to meet next week to determine "punitive damages"............Do I hear the term "bankruptcy" spoken yet

Gawker, publisher slapped with punitive damages over Hulk Hogan sex tape

“A Florida jury awarded punitive damages totaling $25 million on Monday in a second blow to Gawker, coming on top of the $115 million the online news outlet must pay for posting a sex tape of the former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan.

The six-person jury assessed Gawker $15 million in punitive damages. The media company's publisher and CEO, Nick Denton, was slapped with an additional $10 million.

"I think we made history today, because I think we protected a lot of people today who may be going through what I went through," Hogan told reporters Monday…………..

And if I remember the law correctly……………… appellate courts are reluctant to overturn jury verdicts without evidence of serious legal errors…………..

Yep, but the award is unreasonable.

Says you.............lets see what an appellate court says.........And with regard to punitive damages award...........And if I remember the law correctly……………… appellate courts are reluctant to overturn jury's punitive award verdicts without evidence of serious legal errors..........

Yep says me. The award is outrageous

Thank you for sharing your opinion...............

For myself........

I'll wait for an appellate court to make that decision........

In either case......the punitive damages most likely will stand

Perhaps a side wager?

Well, considering that he was illegally recorded, without his knowledge or permission, while performing sex acts with every reasonable expectation of privacy, and that it was openly collected to black mail him --yes, I do think he deserves some compensation. 115 million dollars seems rather large, but I don't know how much was made at his expense.

The amount was meant to be punitive. If you make it affordable to the parties breaking the law then you are promoting breaking the law.

Perhaps a side wager?

Wager on what?

Try rereading my post............

I make no assertions...........

But state the common law principle of courts reluctance to reduce punitive damage awards........

ok....

Intention has nothing to do with getting plowed into by someone who breaks the law by crossing a solid line with a motor vehicle. Ever heard of tort law. I'm guessing you haven't.

Either that or you're just ****ing lame.
