Putin announces Russia will pull most of its military from Syria

The Assad regime has been very durable over decades, with powerful and ruthless security forces. Assad did not become vulnerable until the defections that came with the popular uprising.

Rue, and his regime was at deaths door until the Russians arrived.
Prior to that, Turkey wanted a no fly zone. Enforced by the US- was not happening.
Turkey could have made an incursion into Syria and the Syrian Army would have crumbled. Taken the ports and airports.

OK. I misunderstood. When you say "years ago" you mean "a couple of years ago."

The rebels are not decimated. That is nothing but propaganda.

Russia is broke and Putin's corrupt ass can not afford the cost of the war there. Putin is about to be out of a job anyway. Soon he will be another footnote in the history of the world.
They are back on their heels. Weapons and manpower lacking. That and add in a peace deal. So yes they were decimated, where none is a highly viable force to counter Assad

Vladimir Putin has learned that being a global troublemaker pays dividends.

He’s discovered that being a big part of the problem assures that you are treated as a big part of the solution.

He understands that the politics of blackmail and geopolitical extortion can work wonders.

Putin decided years ago that the West is weak, and he decided that the odds are in Russia's favor if he takes some shots.

So far he has been proven correct.

No. Not quite.

Putin-Stalin was NEVER in Syria to fight ISIS. He was trying to keep Al-Assad's murderer ass in power ... nothing more.

He failed at that task. Al-Assad is going to lose power and then Iran will not have any allies in that region. Iran hates that... but the rest of the world rejoices.
