The ignorance of some few Americans will one day lead to an atrocity that cannot be ignored

Buddhist monk, apparently mistaken as Muslim, attacked in Hood River

TROUT LAKE, Wash. — Kozen Sampson, a Buddhist monk and co-founder of the Trout Lake Abbey retreat, said he was attacked Monday during a visit to Hood River.

He doesn't remember much, but says a man, who seemingly thought he was Muslim based on his clothing, attacked him for no reason.

"I pulled over, someone ran up and yelled. I turned around, they kicked the door, hit me in the side of the face and knocked my head into the frame of the car," Sampson said. "I do remember [him yelling] an F bomb [about] Muslims, and that was it."

But instead of anger and hatred towards that man, Sampson said he only feels forgiveness and compassion.

"I was thinking, 'That poor man.' Can you imagine living your life in fear and anger? Can you imagine wanting to do something that you had to hurt somebody?" Sampson said.

Ignorance is not always bliss. Sometimes it is a raging Neanderthal or a pack of them that wish to destroy everything in their ignorance.

I can't wait for the trial if they catch the guy.

*in court*

"Look, the guy was a towelhead, okay? I mean, he wasn't actually wearing a towel on his head, but his skin was kind of darkish. And he was dressed all funny-like. I don't know where you come from, but where I grew up that means you're a ****ing Muslim, okay? And we don't support terrorists who hurt innocent people around these parts. We just beat the **** out of them."

Yeah, America's in a really good place right now. Neoliberalism and all of the anger it engenders in the lower classes, with the rich scapegoating by stoking the flames of bigotry, was a brilliant place to go. Thanks Reagan Republicans and New Democrats. You guys were great!

Like the knockout game or justice for Trayvon, this guilt (targetting?) by association is ridiculous. The sad fact is that bigots tend to include some violent morons - or is it the other way around?

I would be surprised if the monk presses charges. Sadly the monk's peaceful reaction toward his assailant is the lesser story.

The Monk, by taking the approach he did, made a Monkey out that piece of trash. :)
