BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. special forces captured the head of the Islamic State group's unit trying to develop chemical weapons in a raid last month in northern Iraq, two senior Iraqi intelligence officials told The Associated Press, the first known major success of Washington's more aggressive policy of pursuing IS militants on the ground. The Obama administration launched the new strategy in December, deploying a commando force to Iraq that it said would be dedicated to capturing and killing IS leaders in clandestine operations, as well as generating intelligence leading to more raids.
U.S. officials said last week that the expeditionary team had captured an Islamic State leader but had refused to identify him, saying only that he had been held for two or three weeks and was being questioned.

The two Iraqi officials identified the man as Sleiman Daoud al-Afari, who worked for Saddam Hussein's now-dissolved Military Industrialization Authority where he specialized in chemical and biological weapons. They said al-Afari, who is about 50 years old, heads the Islamic State group's recently established branch for the research and development of chemical weapons.

ISIS has been trying to expand its chemical weapons program but it still remains severely limited. This new capture of a top ISIS official who has leadership in the chemical weapons field is a pretty big development.

Time for some serious waterboarding.

And make stuff up to stop the torture? A great way to follow lots of false leads and waste resources.

Bad information equals more severe torture. He'll get the drift.

Obama doing some more good work against ISIS.

Obama doing some more good work against ISIS.

Supporting the MB in Egypt, violating UN1973 in Libya and ruining that country, smuggling arms to the MB, AQ, al Nusra infested fighters in Syria all helped to embolden the Islamic State and advance their agenda. Obama's only achievement in the ME is with regards to Iran.

Yea, I saw him in uniform the other day, waiting to be deployed.

He's the President. He gets credit and blame for everything that a member of the executive (which includes the military) accomplishes.

What is MB?

I wish people could pick a line of rhetoric and stick with it. I mean...come on...what is a JV team doing with a 'chemical arms expert'? Its not like ISIS presents a real threat to anyone...right? And where would THEY get chemical weapons capacity?

Kudos to them. I'm glad they caught him. I hope they are legitimately taking ISIS seriously.

Boo-hoo. We haven't had a President who has actually served since Ford.

Uh, Jimmy Carter was in the Navy and George H.W. Bush fought in WWII.

Carter never saw combat and wasn't Bush just a photographer?

Bush was a pilot. And it's not Carter's fault he never saw combat. Served is served.

Isn't Carter post Ford. I know, you didn't want to soil yourself by giving such credit where due.

Him, too. And Bush 43 was in the National Guard while Clinton and Obama were fighting to end dodge ball in the public schools.
