Carter warns China over increasing militarization of South China Sea | Fox News

Defense Secretary Ash Carter warned China Tuesday against making increasingly aggressive moves in the disputed South China Sea region, days after satellite images revealed Beijing had placed surface-to-air missiles on one of its claimed artificial reefs.

“China must not pursue militarization in the South China Sea,” China said in a speech in San Francisco. “Specific actions will have specific consequences.”
We have an obligation to our allies to address this in some fashion. It appears that Obama is asleep at the switch.

China has man made islands long enough to land the world's largest bombers. They are building underground tunnels to harbor the very large submarine force and neither has been done by any country anywhere in the world. Why are they doing these amazing construction projects? Because there is no one to stop them. China is determined it their duty to rule the Asian part of the world and they know no one will; stand up to them including the war wary United States that would get crushed should we try to challenge them in their own back yard. If there is a WWIII it will be won by the country whose armed forces are shielded from nuclear strikes hence the submarine tunnels. They alone are preparing for something, I wonder what it is.

A huge portion of world maritime trade passes through the South Chins Sea.

Via dubious and probably illegal means (artificial islands), China clearly intends to exert hegemony over this region.

Multiple good points made above. And, one haunting question to which the Administration seems to be oblivious.

From the beginning, U.S. ballistic missile submarines have been shielded from attack by something much more effective than tunnels: Once they are at sea, as most of them are most of the time, no potential aggressor knows just where they are.

China's navy is a pale, puny shadow of the U.S. Navy, which is by far the strongest in the world. China lacks the ability to close off any international waters to U.S. warships--including the ones you describe as being "in their own back yard." And knowing that any attempt to deny those ships the freedom of the seas by force would be an act of war, it would not be so foolish as to try.

China's main interests are purely economical, they have no desire to engage in warfare with the US for any reason. It's all posturing. But they have just as much a right to increase their sphere of influence as the USSR and Russia today does, and the US does. And we have an obligation to our allies to prevent this. Especially now in times of economic uncertainty, I believe Russia and China will both back off naturally as they can't afford sanctions or to engage in political battles.

This is good to know! But, how do you know this, Matchlight?

Also, IF there is a WWIII, there will be no winner. We will all lose!

It is certainly not a nuclear war. No country believes that one is winnable. China has very few nuclear weapons compared to the US and Russia. But if you think China is a threat you can always stop buying **** from them.

No one can ever know anything about this subject with absolute certainty. But the U.S. Navy has never allowed another nation to dictate where it may sail in international waters without a fight, and one sure way to invite a war is to abandon that resolve. In October, 1962, we came closer to a nuclear war than ever before or since. But President Kennedy was sure that if this country were to let the Soviet Union's secret installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba go unchallenged for fear of starting a full-scale war, it would only make that war more likely. He and his advisers agreed that showing weakness in Cuba would probably cause a major war to break out in Germany before too long, as an emboldened Khrushchev made an even more desperate gamble by sending armored forces into West Berlin.

If China starts building an island 90 miles off our coast, you might have a point. Right now keeping an eye on the situation is sufficient. China has no interest in upsetting the apple cart and pissing off a valued trading partner. That is our best assurance of peace.

The point I made is valid for all international waters, everywhere in the world. The United States should go out of its way to assert its right to sail in those waters, whenever and wherever there is any sign that any nation dares to contest that right.

"Keeping an eye on the situation" is a high-sounding way to excuse doing nothing. The U.S. has the most powerful navy in the history of the world, and no other nation is foolish enough to dare try to deny it the freedom of the seas, if the issue is pressed. But no thanks for that to the limpwristed liar currently disgracing the White House. Like many of his acolytes, he resents this country and wants to see it humbled. He has invited just this kind of provocation by showing weakness for seven years.

I think the US should start building a diesel electric missile fleet off the Phillipines. Maybe even build an island of our own.

The new diesel boats are badassed and would be a good fit for the region.

DOh I read your threat title and thought maybe Jimmy Carter was wagging his finger at China. but its Ash Carter.. meh.
China doesn't respect words. It takes at least strong posture and actions.
They did do the two exercises with Destroyers near the Paracel and Spratley island chains. More of that is what is needed.

No one has been denied "freedom of the seas" so you are delusional. We have bases all over the Pacific, China is building one. If they use it for what you say they are we will deal with it. We spend far more on "defense" than China, that gives us the luxury of not having hot headed leathernecks making policy decisions. If you hate China so much just stop buyng their products....if you dare.

I can think of nothing more militarily stupid than submarine tunnels.

Collapse the tunnel and all your submarines are trapped. That's gotta be the dumbest idea ever.

Yeah right? Whats the point? A couple charges thrown overboard and you wipe out all of their subs...

Why only now do republicans give a **** about anything a Democrat says?
