Definitely not and end game but man what a great move away from religious conservatism that leads that country. The people there seem to be getting as close as they can to dropping the mullahs. Great news.

Rouhani's allies make huge gains in Iran elections

Tehran (AFP) - Iran's moderate President Hassan Rouhani won strong public backing and his reformist allies made stunning gains in parliamentary elections, partial results showed Sunday, reducing the potential for opponents to block domestic reform plans.

The reformists scored a unanimous victory in Tehran, taking all 30 seats at the expense of conservatives, including several hardline critics of the landmark nuclear deal between Rouhani's government and world powers.

The Iranian people are leading their political leaders into a revolution of moderates while the American people are leading the political leaders into a revolution of extremists.

I'm just glad that our current President is reasonable enough that he both embraced and is currently helping to further encourage that moderate revolution with a long-time enemy so that perhaps we might, someday, be able to go back to a period when Iran and America were allies (or at least not hostile).

Great news for the people of Iran.

I wonder how they're coming with that nuclear bomb that our right wingers are so sure Obama let them build with the 150 billion we just "gave" them?

It looks like the long game the Obama administration is playing - establishing diplomatic ties with Iran, signing the nuclear deal, etc. is starting to pay off.

Obama was quite clear when he was running for President that he would establish diplomatic talks with Iran (much to the ridicule of the GOP and John McCain - and also Hillary Clinton, BTW), and he has done so throughout his Presidency.

Thanks, Obama!

The reality isn't so rosy. True moderate reformers were disqualified from the election by Ayatollah Khamenei. No real movement.

This was done to maintain control through the election without sparking deadly protests like 2009.

I don't think they are willing to tell us and we don't have the ability to find out for ourselves.

Definitely a step in the right direction no matter what kind of context you are trying to frame it in. Are Iranian "moderates" our (western) version of "moderate politics"? No. Are they certainly the lesser of two evils? Absolutely.

So we have something in common: Each of us thinks the other is wrong.
The agreement calls for up to a 21 day notice of intent to inspect. It also excludes military bases from the allowed inspections. Pretty hard to catch them at anything, wouldn't you say?

How long do you think it would take for them to get their centrifuges going again and enrich enough uranium to actually use to build a bomb? Could they do it in 21 days?

No, they could clear out the installation in a lot less than 21 days so nobody would find anything. That was the point.

I miss the days where we refused to talk to Iran and they wouldnt have held captured sailors for only 24 hours just went and built nuclear weapons at will.

That was great.

Wasn't it though? We could sell them enough arms to fund a war in Central America, and didn't have to get the Congress to approve it.

Back then you and DHN knew right from wrong, good from bad. Yeah, good times.

Oh, yes indeed we did! And, being able to trade arms for hostages was so much better than just getting them released in a few hours. I'm sure that Threegoofs understands that, too.

Well, I just approve of it because I really think the economy does better when we export weapons as much as possible.

The "reality" is great news. Mullahs are trying to maintain control and the people are showing them election by election that they aren't going to stick with the status quo forever.

You actually believe you can move radioactive materials and it not be noticed 21 days later?

I have no idea. Ask the Iranians.
