Donald Trump says he isn't releasing his tax returns yet because they are being audited, though the Internal Revenue Service says that's no barrier to disclosure.

In a statement Friday, the IRS said that federal privacy rules prohibit the agency from discussing individual tax matters, but “nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information.”
While not citing Trump by name, the IRS also disputed the businessman's suggestions that he is being audited for political reasons or because he is a Christian.
“The IRS stresses that audits of tax returns are based on the information contained on the taxpayer’s return and the underlying tax law — nothing else,” the agency said. “Politics and religion do not factor into this. The audit process is handled by career, non-partisan civil servants, and we have processes in place to safeguard the exam process.”
Asked on CNN about the audits, Trump said: "Well, maybe because of the fact that I'm a strong Christian, and I feel strongly about it, maybe there's a bias."
There are many reasons why a taxpayer being audited might want to keep their tax returns private. However, Americans have come to expect that presidential candidates will disclose their returns, said Joseph Thorndike, director of the Tax History Project at Tax Analysts, a leading provider of tax news and analysis.
“I’m sure a careful tax attorney would advise him not to disclose it in the middle of an audit,” Thorndike said of Trump. “But an attorney would say not to disclose it anytime.”
If Trump can’t handle a difficult audit, “he’s running for the wrong job,” said Thorndike, who has called for the New York City businessman and other presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns.
“It’s a willingness to say 'I’m asking for your trust, and I’m willing to provide this information to earn your trust,'” said Thorndike

Trump lies about being a conservative and everything else, but the Trumptards are more interested in destroying the GOP than they are the truth. I can understand why all the democrats and media support Trump but it blows me away that so many conservatives support the guy because he's the least conservative candidate running for the GOP nomination.

He won't release his tax returns because they will further prove he's a baldfaced liar!

Yeah, when I heard Trump give that 'reason' it sounded a LOT like an excuse.

I don't understand why any politician would release their tax returns.

I don't understand why any politician would release their tax returns.

Think of it like a company requiring a drug screening before hiring a job candidate. The American people want to know that their Presidential Candidates are honest. The Trumptards obviously don't care how dishonest Trump is because they'll vote for him no matter what.

I don't understand why any politician would release their tax returns.

Then you don't understand much. This is only the most important job in the universe.

I would want to see Clinton's financial information...

Democrats and the media on both sides are doing everything in their power to prevent Trump from being the nominee. To say that democrats and the liberal media are attempting to help Trump is laughable/a lie. You obviously must have missed the recent debate where about 90% of the questions were either directed at attacking Trump or asking other candidates to do that.

Then you don't understand much. This is only the most important job in the universe.

And what bearing does their agi and how much they gave to charities have on said job?

Obvious fact that doesn't require a link.

1. Not a fact, but an opinion
2. Not obvious -- likely more of a counter-intuitive suggestion, which begs validation.

Support your assertion or sit down.

It is certainly information that a voter might want to have. It is sort of like wanting to know how loyal and honest candidates have been on adhering to their marriage contract, the success they had socializing their kids or their police record. These things all say something about a person and can reveal more about them than the candidate's policy statement.

BWAHAHAHA... So release them Donald. What cha hiding? (Oh the delicious irony from the birther king)

Donald will not release his tax returns, period. First, he will not lose enough support to lose the primary (outside of a brokered convention) to any one of the candidates.

He has stated for the record that he pays as little taxes as possible, and I would expect that to be an understatement. If that’s the case, it would make him just another Mitt Romney less the donations. That would only increase the chance of a brokered convention, the only likely way of him losing the nomination.

Don’t get your hopes up of ever seeing those tax returns. If Trump gets the nomination, he will play the Wall Street Card on Hillary. And since she will never release those transcripts, Donald wins again BWAHAHAHA...

Again... Why are we all of a sudden expecting Trump to abide by common political process practice, when to date his strategy has been to do what is unorthodox and not politically correct? Who really gives a **** what Romney, or this IRS, or the media, or some other candidate thinks?

i wonder why the IRS suddenly volunteers this information? its not like they've been politicized or something.

Yep. The IRS has no business getting involved but there they are...

The IRS is being political here, I believe.

Of course there's no legal requirement to not discuss taxes & income under audit. But it's prudent not to!

Same for court cases, civil or criminal.

This is pretty much 'law 101', that even my kids know!

I've got to admit though, the irony is delicious! No different than what Cruz is now going through with his citizenship concerns!

Trump has gotten more free press and more time on air than every other candidate combined. The liberal media is sitting on a crap ton of negative material, photage, and interviews with victims, waiting for him to be the nominee so that they can destroy him and put Hillary in. He is good ratings, and building him up now makes it easier for them to win in November. They are absolutely cheering him on.

In the last debate, Trump got more time to speak than anyone else, and almost twice as much as a Rubio. He was allowed to respond to every attack, while Cruz and Rubio were cut off by Wolf Blitzer going to his human-time-out corners of Kasich and Carson.
