—Marco Rubio's campaign is preparing for a contested Republican Convention as one option to take the GOP nomination away from Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, his campaign manager told top donors at a closed-door meeting in Manhattan Wednesday night.

As Rubio scrambles for support ahead of Super Tuesday, Terry Sullivan, Rubio's top adviser, used a Power Point presentation and took questions from attendees to lay out the two courses that Rubio's quest for the GOP nomination could take in the coming months, two people present told CNN, speaking anonymously to share details from a private meeting


It appears that Rubio is ready to concede that his only shot is if somehow he and Cruz can keep Trump from getting enough delegates to cause a brokered convention.


Honestly, the BEST thing that could happen to the Republicans right now is for a brokered convention to occur....where they can draft Romney as their candidate. There isn't a doubt in my mind that Romney (after Jeb dropped out) is kicking himself for not running....and is waiting in the wings to pick up the mantle.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount it. I think the GOP is extremely unhappy with what they have right now and are willing to give Romney another look.
 
Romney called the RNC early on, he even dipped his toe in the race at the first. Saw the reaction, from both the RNC and the public, and ran crying to his room. He's massively pissed off that Trump is doing what he wanted to do. Ah, Mom, why do the other billionaires get all the luck!

Romney is going nowhere but the dust bin. Rubio can maybe have a shot in eight years. Cruz, he'll be a constant fly in the senatorial ointment. And Trump will be POTUS. There will be no brokered convention. The RNC will back Trump after the results of Super Tuesday. This will all be over but the crying by March 15.

I think you are probably right.....however, don't forget that Romney was ready to run until Jeb's camp persuaded him not to. The ONLY reason that Romney didn't run was because he assumed that Jeb would be the nominee. I think Trump is going to get the nomination, but in the event that the convention becomes brokered, I think there is a strong chance that the GOP looks to an outside candidate that hasn't been beaten up in this process...and Romney would be more than willing to step in.

How can trump become president if alienates every minority and moderate in the country?
 
My prediction is that Rubio won't even take 10% of the Super Tuesday delegates and he will not be a factor in a brokered convention should one happen.
 
I don't see a happy ending in any event. Bernie may be the only survivor at the end of this. The FBI may take Hillary out, and naturally the republicans will volunteer to take themselves out.
 
On a different tact, how ironic is it that the best shot the GOP has to overcome Trump is to throw everything behind Cruz?

Because folks aren't as moderate as they claim to be, nor are folks who say they'll vote for someone else and not Trump necessarily telling you the truth. I hear it all the time, "don't tell anyone, but I'm voting Trump".

Good. There is no reason why we should allow Trump to conduct a hostile takeover. Better to have him go third party and lose the WH in 2016.

Actually at this point in the Race Rubio has a much broader path than Cruz does. Losing South Carolina like he did was a gut punch, which is why some of his key supporters are getting ready to jump ship to Rubio.

Wrong. Rubio cannot show one, not one place he can win until it's all over. By the time he gets a win, the race will be done. He may be thinking this is the Special Olympics, where second or third is winning, but it's not.

Rubio and Cruz are tied in the delegate count, and Rubio is beating him in the majority of the states coming up in the calendar, especially counting by delegate.

Why do you think that Cruz's backers are beginning to say nice things about Rubio, getting ready to see if they need to jump ship, etc? Because math is math.

You claim to know the math and then disregard the facts. NONE of the polling shows Rubio coming anywhere close to number one. That's the only number that counts. Number two is called the loser. Rubio's delegate math is similarly crippled.

And you haven't been listening to what the Cruz's people say if you think they've been praising Rubio.

Under that scenario, he wins the generals easily. He'll get the repubs he "fooled" and the dems who by your supposition put him in place.
 
The only way the Rubio gets a brokered convention is if he can win enough of the states left to keep trump from getting
a majority of the delegates. I don't think he has the support as he once did.

he get destroyed in SC where and in NV. in both places he needed a stronger showing and trump had both him and cruz by double
digits.

Rubio just didn't come out as strong as he should have and I think that was a mistake.
