Cam Newton now owes the state of California tons of money after the Super Bowl

I think my post stood on its own. You suggested he shouldn't owe California anything. Now, I'm not sure if you were making a moral statement (how dare California tax him) or giving tax advice (are you a CA CPA?). I assumed the former.

I said that various states have statutory definitions of taxable income earned within that state, which often includes people having to pay income taxes to that state even though they are not residents. My states rights inclusion was validating that individual states have the right to do so (tax non-residents for income earned in that state), in case your objection was a moral one (how dare they?).

https://www.ftb.ca.gov/individuals/fileRtn/Nonresidents_PartYear_Residents.shtml#how_taxed

If the income is earned in California, it is subject to California income tax. Residency is not relevant except to determine what form to file.

Of course I suggested that he shouldn't owe California anything. I'm not in favor of someone being taxed for "working" for a week in a state. I work for weeks on end in states and don't have to pay taxes there. And no, I never said or implied "How dare California tax him". That's a product of the partisanship in your mind which you can't put aside to have a discussion.

Is Cam Newton a resident of California? If so then this is his own fault.

Most states tax entertainment & sports salaries as though you were a resident, sometimes with specific rates, for games/events played in that locale.. Until 2015 when it was struck down, Cleveland Ohio had a "jock tax" that levied an additional 2% income tax on sports players playing games in Cleveland, regardless of residency.

In total, 22 states have special tax rules for sports players.

yep I can't afford sanders I don't know to many working people that can.

So what you are saying is Sanders' plans putting more money in your pocket makes for a harder living for you? You need some math lessons. lol

Single payer will save people thousands.

On average it saves thousands.

Well you can just guess for yourself or read up on the topic. Like this open letter from economist Gerald Friedman who the WSJ cited as their source when they fabricated that $18 trillion figure for Bernie's plans. As you can guess, he was a bit peeved at them citing him wrongly.
eh, im sure you can find dozens on the other side too. why do you believe him in particular - because he tell you what you want to hear?

btw i think they said john mccain was "too old" but bernie's even older.

I believe him because the WSJ wrote that scathing editorial on the cost of Sanders' policies (that many in here is using as a source) and they cited his (Gerald Friedman's) work to do so... and that open letter was Gerald Friedman setting the record straight proving the WSJ's editorial page to be FoS as usual...

Also this debunks everyone's post in here that was using that WSJ editorial hack piece as evidence.

*edit... I think I'm getting my threads mixed up. sry.

Not just rich people problems but rich pro athlete problems. Getting paid about 20 million a year to play sports. yea..

there's a different issue though - does every jurisdiction in this country get to tax you - (every state, city, county, whatever) wherever you go? what if there are some firefighters on loan from Arizona to California to fight some wildfires or vice versa? will the state of california be sending those firefighters a tax bill because they worked temporarily inside the state of california? (probably there are much better examples)

(but its fun to take away the rights of the 1% - because you're jealous?)

Not as tenacious as he is. Doods a machine that's taking down THE machine.

Cam Newton now owes the state of California tons of money after the Super Bowl | For The Win#

These are your blue states, America.

Imagine if Bernie Sanders wins. Cam would have to file bankruptcy.
[/INDENT]

Honestly, consider the nature of California. It is the capital of the entertainment industry. Many of the entertainers that really do make a living in California reside in multiple places. If California did not have such a provision, they would be a huge loophole.

If Bernie Sanders wins, Cam Newton will be just fine. Sanders is not proposing taxes that completely consistent with the taxes paid in most of the industrial world. The US has some of the lowest taxes in the first world, with some of the poorest government services. Sanders is proposing to bring each more in line with our peer group.

Please note that I am not saying I agree with him. I do, however, understand where he is coming from. I thought I could enlighten you a bit.
