I think my post stood on its own. You suggested he shouldn't owe California anything. Now, I'm not sure if you were making a moral statement (how dare California tax him) or giving tax advice (are you a CA CPA?). I assumed the former.
I said that various states have statutory definitions of taxable income earned within that state, which often includes people having to pay income taxes to that state even though they are not residents. My states rights inclusion was validating that individual states have the right to do so (tax non-residents for income earned in that state), in case your objection was a moral one (how dare they?).

If the income is earned in California, it is subject to California income tax. Residency is not relevant except to determine what form to file.
Of course I suggested that he shouldn't owe California anything. I'm not in favor of someone being taxed for "working" for a week in a state. I work for weeks on end in states and don't have to pay taxes there. And no, I never said or implied "How dare California tax him". That's a product of the partisanship in your mind which you can't put aside to have a discussion.
