With the Zika virus now circulating in two dozen countries and territories across the Americas, the mosquito-borne pathogen seems destined to reach the United States, and probably sooner rather than later.

What is far less certain, say public health and infectious disease experts, is Zika’s potential reach and impact here. The South is seen as especially vulnerable because of its warm, humid climate and pockets of poverty where more people live without air conditioning or proper window screens. Plus, the region is already home to mosquitoes that can transmit the virus.

Some models estimate as many as 200 million people live in areas that might be conducive to the spread of Zika during summer months — including the East and West coasts and much of the Midwest. That makes for a huge target as researchers scramble to determine how the virus manifests itself in the human body, who is particularly at risk, and why.

Their urgency comes amid reports from Brazil, the epicenter of Zika, of thousands of newborns with microcephaly. The rare condition involves an abnormally small head and brain. Brazilian doctors have also seen a surge in another rare syndrome, Guillain-Barré, which can lead to paralysis. With both issues, a link to Zika is suspected.

Man, what ever happened to Ebola? If I am going to be all scared of a disease, I want one with a cool sounding name...

Zika sounds like an exercise fad. Why worry? Zoomba, Zika, Zam...

Man, what ever happened to Ebola?

The incompetent Obama administration mishandled Ebola into a nationwide scourge.
I expect the same result with the Zika virus.

Hang on. As Kurmugeon already told us, you should be DEAD by now from ebola unless, as he also claimed, you were a secret liberal inoculate.

Dude, if there's one thing my friends from the South know how to do, it's manage insects.

What do you know about The Project?

Something like Moaning Agony Syndrome (MAS)?

I know, it's horrible. It's a fate I wouldn't wish on anyone.

I am neither Born Again Christian nor Buddhist. Safe? ;)

You're of course joking, right? Unless we live in alternate realities where DP connects our two worlds together, Ebola was by and large over hyped and seriously overblown. The Obama administration had nothing to "mishandle".

I never kid around.
I am a serious, very serious poster.
Seriously.

Oh....sure. That's what the lamestream media wants you to believe. When all this snow melts, millions, if not billions of bodies of Ebola victims will be revealed.

The Obama administration had nothing to "mishandle".
Nothing is the keyword here. In order to protect my loved ones, I had to rely on America's Finest News Source.....

How To Protect Yourself Against Ebola - The Onion - America's Finest News Source...

Thanks to these valuable anti-ebola steps, myself and----apparently---the entire Left Coast were spared the horrors of the ebola catastrophe.
Avoiding bat soup and not being born in Gabon were particularly valuable preventive measures.

I've been reading up a bit on this and it does seem to have a very direct and widespread impact on the neural development of babies in utero. Numbers are only at 4000 affected babies so far, but it's still a relatively new story.

it causes birth defects and cant be treated

Zika outbreak: What you need to know - BBC News

There's a correlation between an increase in Zika infections and incidents of microencephaly, but no causative connection. For we know, the two may not even be connected and this correlation is simply a coincidence. I'm a big fan of erring on the side of caution with this kind of thing, but please don't buy into the hype and stick to the known facts instead of taking something that is clearly stated as being "may be connected" and jumping to "they are connected". We need to react appropriately and that means protecting these children from the possibility of this threat, but remember that it's not a proven threat, just a possible one.

If he really said that, that's f'n hilarious.

I'm glad my family left the south in the great depression for California, best thing they ever did.
