In Reversal, Campaign Says Ted Cruz Does Have Health Insurance

Ted Cruz has health insurance, and he had it all along, his campaign said Friday night, reversing what the presidential candidate said a day earlier.

Mr. Cruz told a Manchester, N.H., audience on Thursday that he was currently uninsured — which he said infuriated his wife –after Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas canceled many individual policies, including his. As a result, Mr. Cruz said he was now looking to buy a new plan at sharply higher premiums, a turn of events he attributed to the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare. Mr. Cruz has been a harsh critic of the health law.

But it turns out he was never uninsured. So why did he think he had lost coverage and didn’t have any currently?

I guess he was just too busy to pay attention to those letters coming to him from BC/BS, too busy to even listen to whichever office flunky is delegated to go thru his mail everyday - or maybe he just hired some incompetent who probably votes Democrat because they are so ignorant - right?

I thought he said he lost his health insurance, not that he was currently uninsured.

"You know who one of those millions of Americans who's lost their health care because of Obamacare? That would be me. I don't have health care right now," he told an audience in Manchester, New Hampshire.

"I had purchased an individual policy and Blue Cross Blue Shield canceled all their individual policies in the state of Texas effective December 31st [False]," Cruz explained. "So our health care got canceled. We got a notice in the mail. Blue Cross Blue Shield was leaving the market [False]."

BCBS ended their PPO plans and transferred everyone who didn't make an election for another policy into their HMO plan. So either he's an idiot or has idiot advisers who ignored what were I'm sure repeated letters about the switch, the switch happening, the new insurance cards, a copy of the new plan with all the new coverage details, etc. or he's a liar.

And BCBS didn't cancel all their individual plans in Texas or leave the Texas market. They are still in Texas issuing plans to individuals. Anyone can go on the exchange and see all their HMO plans.

What is a bit surprising is he made claims so easily proved wrong.

Multipayer systems can be confusing and they do require a bit of mental effort from the consumer.

Perhaps Ted would be better off voting for Bernie.

Surprised? Not me, not any more, not even a little bit. Politicians have always lied, but there use to be consequences if they were caught. Now, because of rabid partisan politics, there are no consequences any more. Now Cruz flat out lies, gets caught, and he'll move on to his next campaign stop and lie again.

What surprises me is Cruz hasn't blamed the 'liberal media' for HIS lie. That's the GOP's line now. Any time they screw up it's the media fault. Self responsibility be damned.

1. The argument that he could have gotten another plan isn't terribly germane to the point that he lost his plan when the President (as I recall, this was Politifacts' Lie Of The Year) had sworn up and down to the American people that we wouldn't. That is a legitimate point for Cruz to make.

2. That being said, to claim you don't have health insurance when you do is indeed a falsehood.

3. However, as you point out, it's an odd one to make - easily disproven and (apparently) immediately withdrawn.

That's suggestive that this wasn't deliberate, but rather a result of getting carried away. So, a point against him, but good on Ted for manning up and admitting the error, instead of doubling down (Trump) or trying to weasel out of it (Clinton).

No, it isn't. Obama never claimed he was banning insurers from reshuffling their product offerings. Particularly in CY2016.

Why would a local Blue not be able to discontinue an unprofitable product line?

This is as absurd as claiming Obama "lied" to me because when I moved states, Obama didn't forcibly relocate my PCP with me. Obama said I could keep him!

That's a nice attempt to shift the goalposts and weasel out. The President never said "If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."? Gee, there seem to be all these videos of him saying that.....

No, he lied because he falsely claimed that Obamacare wouldn't lead to the cancellation of peoples plans.

As the White House then implicitly admitted, when their response was to claim that it-didn't-matter-because-those-plans-sucked,-anyway.

Except that has nothing to do with Cruz. Cruz was already in an ACA compliant plan. He just bought it last year. So what does BCBSTX discontinuing that product for 2016 have to do with Obama?

BCBS had to pull out of the individual market due to Obamacare. As predicted, community rating combined with guaranteed issue created perverse incentives. It is fully legitimate for Cruz to talk about losing his plan in a discussion of the effects of Obamacare. It just isn't legitimate to claim he is currently uninsured.

...they didn't pull out of the individual market. In fact, Cruz's entire family was automatically transferred over to a different BCBSTX individual market product. See: this thread.

Huh. Well you may be right - I'm on my phone at current, and my awareness is agreeably limited. Which company was it that was making noise about pulling out?

The point, however, remains. Millions of Americans lost their plans - the plans they liked - because of Obamacare. If Cruz was one of them :shrug: he should bring it up. He just shouldn't exaggerate his current status.

Yeah it is. A Bosnian Sniper Fire lie is a lie that is "holy crap," sociopathic levels of lying. Clinton made up that lie because she believed it helped her in some way (although to this day I have no idea how it would) and Cruz did the same because it served a dubious political point. It wasn't just a half lie, a white lie, or mostly a lie. It was a lie that wore its own t-shirt emblazened with the word "liar!" on it in glow-in-the-dark letters. Which also happen to tell lies.

When I learned about the Bosnian sniper fire lie I deemed Clinton's credibility to be tainted forever. After Cruz's lying liary lie, his supporters should likewise and forever treat his words with skepticism. Someone who would tell that kind of lie cannot be trusted.
