North Korea arrests American student for 'hostile act,' state media says

Americans are always waltzing around places they really shouldn't be! :lamo

I walk where I choose to walk as Norman Thomas said.

This was epic stupidity, there is no valid reason to take the risks in traveling to North Korea. The State Department has issued warning after warning on this going so far as to suggest North Korea has a habit of manufacturing reasons to detain and arrest just about anyone. Anyone entering North Korea has no rights whatsoever, and can be subject to any treatment that government decides.

So here's my question:

Why on Earth would any American enter North Korea? Why? Why? Why?

The stupidity here just seems astronomical.

According to the article the name of the tour company who booked him was Young Pioneers. Wasnt the YP the Hitler Youth version of the boy scouts in the old USSR?

Oh well, stupid is as stupid does. I honestly dont think the gubmint should spend taxpayer money in trying to rescue idiots like him.

It sucks to have to regret venturing where you should have never gone to.

Perhaps we could send Sean Penn over there to broker a deal. :lamo

We spend taxpayer money to correct the stupid choices of youth on a constant, daily basis. Why stop with a hostile country? :)

I agree this was stupid. I think I would have only done this when I was a young drunk student, myself. And probably would have sobered up before reaching Korea.

When I saw the title I wondered exactly the same thing.
That said, I have been into NK several times, it was something anyone on the DMZ did at least once and for some a couple of times. Of-course we were armed to the teeth and knew we would have to fight if discovered, they (the NK's) did the same and ran spies back and forth.

Has anyone seen DemSocialist posting lately? He says he wants to visit there and maybe he succeeded.

I wonder how much money and time the State Department is going to spend to retrieve his stupid ass. Of course there will be the whining by his parents, that raised him to be dumb as a stump, to take action and save the stupid ass.

My sentiments exactly. North Korea has a history of kidnapping people. Nor is this the first time they detained an American for bogus charges. It would be a like black man going to a ku klux klan rally out in the middle of nowhere and expecting nothing bad to happen to him.It would be like a Christian going to a die hard Islamic country to preach about Jesus and expecting nothing bad to happen to him. It would be like running out in the middle of a busy highway and expecting nothing bad to happen.

I really hate to say this guys, but knowing this subject and in depth as I do, his arrest OF COURSE is not right by any international standard whatsoever.

HOWEVER North Korea very rarely inters people at Random.

The last couple of cases was a young American man just like this one who ripped up his passport in passport control.

Another left a bible in his hotel room.

You have to be really careful what you do and say in DPRK and I can almost guarantee you he did something silly or wasn't thinking.

But we'll have to wait to see, there is no specifics here in what he did that warranted such a response.

not only would sean penn rescue the kid, he'd also probably convince ol' kimjong to resign and institute democracy across the land.

before he got back on the plane, he will most likely have written, directed and starred in the Oscar-winning film about the story.

there's nothing sean penn can't fix.

Where's Dennis Rodman when you need him?

I agree, and we as a nation need to stop enabling this stupidity. Letting a few idiots rot in North Korea by making no effort to get them back would probably discourage the practice.

Let's give it a go.

I disagree. Most young men do stupid things and we can and should try to help them out of jams they have got themselves into. Would you let your brother rot in NK Hawkeye?

(As its happens I am one of the rare exceptions. I have never done anything stupid. Ever. The same may be true for each and everyone of our fellow male posters ........... although somehow I doubt it).

Here is my answer:

5 years ago at a family bonfire my one of my daughters, who was 19 at the time, said "we cant save everyone, and the stupid ones can go first".

I concurred.

Anyone with the name "Warmbier" deserves to be arrested.

So is another Obama classic deal where we deal 5 North Korean spies for this 1 college student?

Hurr hurr, look at me I'm 21 and I won't listen to anyone. I will go to NK even though everyone I know has told me not to, because I'm smarter than everyone else and it will be different with me!

i've got a nutty idea.

you ready?

stop.
****ing.
letting.
Americans.
visit.
that.
****hole.

and if they go anyway? then if they catch you, tough ****. i know it's all interesting to sneaky sneak into NK, and yeah, i watched the Vice video, too, but hanging out in Kimland is droolingly dumb. we need an official policy on this, because they keep arresting our citizens, and they always expect something in return for their release.
