North Korea arrests American student for 'hostile act,' state media says

I dunno... Despite the fact its government sanctioned tours, they generally only let you see what they want you to see, curiosity kills the cat here.

I mean, if you watch this, just tell me it doesn't interest your more adventurous side just a tad...

Being able to say you've been to North Korea would be pretty cool in my view.

I'm still leaving it open, the company that made this video is the most reputable company to go with.

If all went well and I have cash lying around later in life I may also go on their new tour to Turkmenistan:

When they make your execution/prison vid dont forget to mention your DP username so we can make a thread about you in the BN section. :2razz:

if you're a US citizen visiting NK, you're basically bait for the NK government assholes to arrest and use as a bargaining chip. given this, i see no reason for the US to authorize travel to that country.
If people really want to go then let them. My view on it is we shouldnt help people that get into trouble doing dumb things like that. If you want to go then we wont be responsible for what happens next.

i feel the same way, and then i don't. i hate the idea of anyone trapped in those hellhole labor camps. that's why my emotional reaction is to ban any American from visiting NK.

Well, if you don't want to catch the blame, then don't take the big office....

The US president is responsible for Americans who go to places they really shouldn't go?

I didn't read the whole, but it said North Korea allows US citizens to travel since 2010.

Do we have direct flights to NK?

Do we stamp passports for NK?

I believe as a Westerner you HAVE to go through Tour Companies in China that run out of Beijing, one of the only cities connected to Pyongyang by air travel.

Requirements are a Valid Passport, multi-entry Chinese visa and the Tour Company takes care of your North Korean Visa.

You can use USD and EUR only in DPRK (You will never get your hands on local currency).

I believe if you have a ROK stamp you will be disallowed entry into DPRK and vice versa can also cause you some headaches.

All of which is outside of US control except the passport. Therefore, how does on expect the US to stop US citizens from gong there?

You couldn't.

The only thing you could do is impose some kind of penalty for going such as was done with Cuba as a deterrent.

Otherwise there's no way to stop someone determined to go to DPRK.

It's also really difficult to help if you get into trouble, the only embassy that will assist is the Swedish Embassy and there's little they can do either.

It's a risky proposition... but a calculated one... for myself, there's little chance I'd have a problem, I understand the rules, the Faux Pas', the pitfalls and sensitivities and I'm not from a sensitive country such as the US, in fact my country of birth would help me in a situation hopefully.

Well, as the left has been stressing-everything that happens for the first 6 years of a POTUS is the fault of the preceding one.

You are blaming Clinton, and I agree, he was weak.

I guess you didnt read the article then because its not Clinton.

I would tell China that they have to get him back unharmed since it was their entity that allowed it. If they don't, use it as a reason to impose trade sanctions.

Outside of that, the US should not coddle a stupid individual.

Clinton could only be blamed if it was enacted under his presidency, and an ongoing mission, and Bush didn't know about it yet.

I find that rather unlikely though...

is that what I said? Nah....Don't think so....;)

I don't think you understood what you said. Here, let me rephrase my question so that you don't have trouble with all of the big words: How is this Obama's fault in ANY way?
