Black Lives Matters Demonstrators Block All Westbound Bay Bridge Lanes « CBS San Francisco

All lanes of the Bay Bridge have reopened about an hour and a half after protesters shut down all lanes just east of Treasure Island Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. Protesters announced just before 4 p.m. they had shut down Bay Bridge traffic heading into San Francisco. They posted photos of several protesters chained to cars stopped across the bridge. Members of protest groups Black Seed and the Black Queer Liberation Collective took responsibility for the protest in a statement, citing recent police shootings.

Look, I like "Black Lives Matter". They have important things to say about racism in the United States. However, this was a criminal act, and people should be going to jail. There is a difference between protesting and violating the Constitution by not allowing others their right of freedom to travel. With rights also come responsibilities, and these demonstrators have demonstrated that they are not responsible people.

Part of me says I love it when they do this nonsense in leftist cities. Its basically like the left eating their own. Many of these leftist helped demonized cops as thugs with licenses to hunt black men or perpetuated this idea that somehow black people are just dying left and right at the hands of cops. Now countless morons are shutting down streets, malls, looting, rioting, harassing people at colleges, and leftist presidential candidates and other idiotic things under this false idea that somehow cops are just hunting black men or just shooing black people left and right.

They should have occupied a vacant shack or seldom if ever used road somewhere. Take a stand. Stay there for months.

BTW...in the first 2 weeks of 2016 over 100 people have been shot in Chicago and not a peep.

Black lives dont matter. Cause driven liberals prove it every day.

Yeah, but the article doesn't say "by the police," nor does it indicate how many were Black and how many were not.

I also goes on to say:

The majority of the gun violence we’ve seen are a result of chronic gang conflicts driven in part by social media commentary and petty disputes among rival factions.
More than 100 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year - Chicago Tribune

So, as has been asked over and over, if Black Lives Matter so much to their peers, why do they keep shooting each other?

2 Thoughts actually:

1) Good, they should have been. It won't stop some leftist media (and, of course, twitter) from having a meltdown on how it's wrong they were arrested and if they were white it wouldn't happen, and police hate BLM and yadda yadda yadda.

2) Black Queer Liberation Collective has to be the most San Francisco name for a group I've heard in a long time.

You go anyplace in the world where there is a lack of meaningful employment and you'll see violence, drug crimes, vandalism, etc. Ghetto's are called ghetto's for a reason, when the minorities moved in the business owners moved out and took their money, jobs, and opportunity with them to the suburbs or more expensive parts of the city, leaving the residents to fend for themselves and up to their own devices.

The parts of Chicago where you see high rates of violent crime are the parts of Chicago where there is a severe lack of jobs that pay above poverty wages. You grow up around that your whole life and hang out with the wrong people as so many black youth do, and it's only natural progression that leads you into gang life.

Give youths an economic alternative

Gangs are businesses built around a formidable drug economy. They realize that youths are a valuable resource, and they are serving an unmet economic need in low-income communities. Businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations and government should come together to create a viable economic strategy to employ youths, meet financial need and realize their potential as contributors to our economy.

In addition to economic underinvestment, we have underinvested emotionally in many of our youths. They lack the communities and relationships that bring value and attachment to life. In our program, we watch youths transform as they receive attention, shape their identity and voice, find community and realize a pathway toward a desirable future. We need to prioritize fostering educational and youth communities that serve social-emotional needs and engage each young person as an individual with remarkable potential.

I believe that many progressives including yourself seem to excuse or try to blame bad behavior on someone other than the person committing the crime. Is it hard for inner city youth or poor groups to function without good paying jobs? Yes of course it is. Does this excuse people from making their own choice to get involved with drugs and crime? No it should not. There is a severe lack of responsibility that many people on the far left seem to push on minorities. It is almost that they believe they are incapable of behaving any other way than by selling drugs and getting involved with crime. The general lack of responsibility is why so many continue to go down this path.

If you are growing up and your entire life you see people glamorizing drug selling and flashy lifestyles in the music that you listen to, and you are being constantly told that you have no other option than to live on the government or sell drugs by the media what do you think people will be inclined to do? Not having a job at 16 does not entitle someone to commit crimes or legitimize criminal behavior. I feel this is often forgotten when progressives try to "figure out" why people choose these paths. Blaming business leaders that often have their stores robbed or hit by cross fire due to gang activity should not be blamed. The people committing the crimes should be. This is my problem with the modern progressive viewpoint on things.

Agreed. Support for the BLM movement is fragile at best. This does help their cause or gain them any support.

Exactly. Blocking shoppers from malls during Christmas is just as irresponsible and inconsiderate as this blockade. They don't think about the poor blokes who just want to earn a living. Selfish, very selfish is what they are. I understand the need to make their voices heard, and wanting to make a big impact, but they are going way too far at the cost of others, blacks and whites, rich and poor alike.

Yeah right. Have you ever been out of work? Did you rob, steal, and shoot people? No? Me neither. This excuse is lame. What we have is a cultural problem.

BTW, do you think business moves out just because minorities move in, or because neighborhoods become dangerous? ;)

I agree. This is the biggest hurdle black people need to overcome is being there own worst enemy. To protest in violation of the constitution is a slap in the face to everything MLK stood for.

Black lives matter is important but you would never know it by the way black people treat each other.

Take the use of the N word when talking or referring to each other. They don't realize how sick they sound. If you want to command respect you must first respect yourself and others.

They need to stop killing each other. Again they are there own worst enemy.

When trying to fix a problem it is always best to make sure you are not the main source of the problem.

With that said lets get to another problem. Where I have worked the black people got the day off but not anyone else but not a paid holiday. I believe it should be a paid holiday for everyone in this country. What MLK did for the people of this country is monumental and should be celebrated by all Americans.

I agree. I support civil disobedience, but only to the extent where it doesn't infringe on the rights of others.

What I'd like to see the BLM group do is adopt a policy of helping others instead of hindering. If they were to organize, get the media on board and then set out in groups to help people clean yards, deliver meals, paint houses, etc., we'd all be seeing the best side of them. And, isn't that what they want, after all? To be seen as contributing and productive members of society that deserve as much respect as anyone else?

They walk a fine line here. Protests make the public aware there's a problem, but it's easy to cross the line and lose public support.

It'll be interesting to see where this group is a year from now.

Close, but no cigar.

I lived in Watts before the Watts riots. Take a close look at all the historical records. The rioters were destroying and raiding businesses in their own neighborhood leaving a wreck behind that no sane businessman wanted to take a chance on filling again.

With examples like that, of course it will take great incentives to encourage the risks of re-investing.

That said, poverty is not just a Black problem, it is endemic to our current system and cuts across all races. Crime, and other issues must be addressed by working on the causes. However, as long as "greed is good" remains our capitalist model very little can or will be done.

It's a shame they didn't choose a bridge with lifts. I would have raised them and left the fools stranded then bill them for lost tolls.
