President Obama Says US Seeing Results of Diplomacy With Iran - ABC News

Speaking to the nation from the White House President Obama announced the implementation and release of hostages….and will be remembered as a major accomplishment of his Presidency………. For myself, I praise the peace maker and despise the demagogue

The implementation of the Iranian nuclear deal and five Americans freed by Tehran in a prisoner swap are reasons for optimism, President Obama said Sunday during a rare weekend address, showing the fruits of diplomacy with a still-hostile adversary of the United States.

"This is a good day," the president said. "Once again, we’re seeing what’s possible with strong American diplomacy."

Four U.S. citizens freed by Iran -- including Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian -- were released Sunday, according to a senior administration official and their families. A fifth American, Matthew Trevithick, had already left the country.

As part of the prisoner swap, the U.S. offered clemency to seven Iranians, six of whom are dual U.S.-Iranian citizens, who had been convicted or were awaiting trial in the U.S., said the official. The U.S. also removed Interpol red notices and dismissed charges against 14 Iranians for whom extradition was unlikely to be successful.

Sanctions against Iran were also lifted Saturday as part of its nuclear deal. Obama said the negotiations made way for a new diplomatic channel with Iran, one that he said would remain open during the search for former FBI agent Robert Levinson, who was last seen on Iran's Kish Island in March 2007.

Obama also hailed the cooperation between Iranian and U.S. diplomats that secured the release of 10 sailors last week who drifted into Iranian territorial waters.

“Some folks here in Washington rushed to declare that it was the start of another hostage crisis,” Obama said. “Instead, we worked directly with the Iranian government and secured the release of our sailors in less than 24 hours.”

During his statement, the president also announced the resolution of a decades-long financial dispute that will result in the U.S. sending back $400 million to Iran, plus $1.3 billion in interest. He explained the settlement would save billions of dollars that “could have been pursued by Iran.”

“Nuclear deal done, prisoners released, the time was right to resolve this dispute as well,” Obama said.

Obama also reiterated what he said was proof of the strength of American diplomacy.

“These things are a reminder of what we can achieve when we lead with strength and wisdom,” he said

Yup, we sure are. Just look at the next thread you posted after this one. Let's see... we lifted sanctions and they captured 20 US Navy Sailors in international waters... we gave them their Billions of Dollars back and then say "Wait a second, you Iranians are getting advanced missiles that are against UN resolutions" ... and not last or least, we gave them 7 Iranian spies plus dropped charges and lifted the Interpol arrest warrants on 14 other Iranians so we could get 5 Americans released by Iran, One of which decided he ain't leaving Iran (you heard that right, one of them is getting out of prison but not leaving Iran). So far it looks like Iran should be the one bragging, not the White House.

No insult intended but........

You got the Faux Noise talking point facts..........most of what you say is based upon lies distortions and selectively cherry picked facts.........and then used to come to some silly and meaningless conclusion.........so what if some folks in Iran are slapping each other on the back......Get real!

BTW

Are you aware of the constraints and compliance requirements in the Deal.....and how they are enforced .......... a lot more than knee jerk and politically motivated thought was incorporated in the agreement..........If you bothered to study the issue ........you would then understand.

Let's say I'm cautiously hopeful, but inclined to skepticism regarding Iran's long term intentions.

A normal feeling I am sure many thoughtful folks are experiencing too......... but since I have no idea of what the future will bring.....I will support.... be hopeful and work for peace.... what more positive thing can one do?

Again... I don't watch Fox News. I do, however, look at the facts and actually do my own thinking rather than depending on either political spokespersons or political pundits posing as news agencies to tell me what to think, like the ABC article in the OP. No insult intended.

If there is to be any diplomatic advantage to doing the Nuke Deal it will have to wait for the next president, because when it comes to international diplomacy Obama is as much of a basket case as he is in conducting Washington Politics. This guy will spend his last two years plus in office with no power other than signing executive orders, the lamest of any lame duck in history baring any cataclysmic event where we cant get by without a President so we need to reanimate him.

Did anyone notice how Iran just Yesterday I think it was on purpose embarrassed the USA by announcing that that they are buying 114 planes from AirBus, and that Airbus already has some of the planes ready to deliver? This forced a statement from AirBus to the effect that according to law they can not negotiate with Iran just yet so there is no deal. Which means that yes there is, and it will be announced by Airbus just as soon as such an announcement is legal. And here is the kicker: just two days before this Iran announcement Team Obama made a big deal in the national press that he was signing a piece of paper that will allow Boeing to negotiate with Iran on the day the sanctions are lifted.

BOOM!

But that does not stop The Professor prattling on with his crap about how chummy Iran and the USA are going to be because of HIM.. He is sure that we the American people are too ignorant to know the truth.

Some are, but not all.

How is it then you have most facts wrong?

Just of interest..........What sources do you use/read/listen to get your news from?

The Russian ruble has dropped to a new low, battered by weak oil prices

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian ruble, battered by weak oil prices, on Monday fell to an all-time low against the euro and dropped to its lowest level in more than a year against the dollar.

The Central Bank set the official exchange rate at over 85 rubles to the euro on Monday. The national currency declined by 2 percent to 79.1 rubles to the dollar in Moscow, its lowest trading level since December 2014.

Oil, the mainstay of the Russian economy, recently plummeted to under $30 a barrel, a 13-year low. The ruble is also under pressure from economic sanctions that the West imposed on Russia for its involvement in the Ukraine crisis.

Russia is running a budget deficit of 3 percent of GDP this year, and the government is looking to cut 10 percent from the federal budget, which was drafted with oil prices of $50 a barrel in mind.

Here is an unexpected benefit of the Iranian Nuclear Deal………….
Addition of Iranian oil to the already overloaded market will force the price lower…………
…and reducing income Russia depends upon…..
Putting more pressure on Russia’s financial stability……….
