In this case, the father wouldn't have been sacrificing himself for his child, he would have died a meaningless death. leaving his daughter to not only have to deal with being raped, but with the death of her father. He made one of the most difficult decisions any parent could ever face and he made the right choice. There wasn't anything he could have done to stop the rape, so he had to make the unimaginably horrific choice to allow one tragedy in order to protect his daughter from an even greater one. We all want to protect those we love, but dying a meaningless death isn't going to do that. My prayer is that the daughter understands the horror her father felt in making that choice.
Personally, I see this as one of those impossible moral dilemmas. It's more a kind of rorschach test than anything. Leaving my wife/daughter/niece/etc. alone to be brutalized by a gang is unthinkable, but so is staying to help knowing I wouldn't be worth a warm bucket of spit in the face of five armed men.
