FDA must develop plan to label genetically engineered salmon, Congress says

That wouldn't help in the least because literally more than half the fish at restaurants isn't even the species the menu claims it is.

I truly doubt that.

Most fish sold in restaurants are sold in chains which have a huge incentive to get their labelling right.

If you think that's the same as a mandatory warning label, I don't know what to tell you.

there is no "warning label". It is informational; just like the list of ingredients which is also mandatory

"Chicken" is an ingredient, and that's a good thing to list.

However, GMO chicken is chicken.

There's no reason to have a blanket label for genetic modifications when all food is genetically modified.

Does that include selective breeding or crossbreeding?

That wouldn't help in the least because literally more than half the fish at restaurants isn't even the species the menu claims it is. You think they'll tell the truth about genetic modifications?

Those shenanigans extend way beyond fish and it boils down to the need for more robust regulation. Even so, forcing consumers to participate in a crap-shoot when it comes to the food that is purchased is the wrong thing to do.

Can you explain the difference between genetically modifying salmon in a lab after years of scientific research... and genetically modifying bananas over thousands of years to look like this:

Instead of this?

Literally everything we eat has been genetically modified over 1000s of years. Rice, beans, carrots, cows, pigs etc. There is nothing we eat that exists today as it did 1000 years ago. Even our dogs have been genetically modified and bred for specific features. Why is there such a fear of people who spend their entire lifetimes researching these foods and making them better? I get fear of pesticides and the hatred for groups like Monsanto. However, the older I get, the less inclined I am to see "genetically modified" as the big boogieman that so many people think it is. We've only made our food better as a result of genetic modifications over 1000s of years, and today thanks in large part to scientific research. Why the fear?
Interesting article on bananas.

Methodology is what differentiates GE from GM.

It's like saying Rock and Classical are the same styles of music because only the style differs

And you've got some evidence that this difference in methodology matters, right?

When I get back to Colorado and get a home, I want to put up a chicken coop and raise some hens. I think it would be nice. Except my wife's dog would likely get its butt kicked by the chickens.

I've contemplated doing that myself. I'm not sure I want the extra hassle of maintaining them though.

Set it up right and it's easy. OTOH, my coop cleaning is minimal because mine go out everyday to forage in my pastures.
