(CNN)Classes have been canceled for the Los Angeles Unified School District due to an unspecified threat, said Los Angeles police spokeswoman Liliana Preciado.

Los Angeles Schools Closed Threat

All Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were closed Tuesday morning after a bomb threat was called in to a school board member, police said.
It was unclear when the threat was made and to which school board member, but the situation prompted the LAUSD to close all schools effective immediately, according to the Los Angeles School Police.
Students and staff were directed to stay away from all campuses.
The Los Angeles Police Department was assisting with the threat investigation.

LAUSD schools closed after bomb threat - LA Times

Being reported that a bomb threat has been called and that all schools will be closed today.

And now, that's all it takes. An entire school district the size of LA with a phone call.

Welcome to the new world.

Looks like we have entered a new norm here in the US, it will not be long before we end up looking like and acting like Israel on a given day.

1965 garrett high school, charleston, sc
bomb threats were - AT LEAST - a weekly occurrence
usually corresponding to some teacher's scheduled major test
after the first one was found to be bogus, classes thereafter continued as usual

don't the terrorists win when their threats cause us to change the way we live our lives?

I guess home schooling is the answer, right?

Over 1,000 schools closed.... Thats massive.

Meh, I remember being evacuated from school back in the early 90s because of a bomb threat. We were a small school, but it's not like this is new. And, at the end of the day, if the school ignored the bomb threat and children got hurt or died, I seriously doubt you would say "well, at least they didn't give in to a phone call".

Listening to kfi now. No mention of a bomb.

So now they can threaten twice a week for the rest of the school year and get this result?

How many days is it going to take for police to comb all these 1,000 schools for bombs before the kids can go back to class?

That's not a criticism as much as it is an observation. This is life now.

They get bomb threats all the time. If they actually made such a decision to close all schools in the district then that must be a special kind of threat. Most of the times a bomb threat is a false alarm, hopefully it's the same in this case.

Who is "they" and why are "they" not in jail for the first one?

I suspect the investigation will be on multiple fronts. I'm sure there may be some police looking for bombs, but I'd bet most of the investigation will be on who made the call and from where.

That's not a criticism as much as it is an observation. This is life now.
But it's been life for a long time now. Bomb scares are hardly anything new.

Shutting down 900 schools is really something.

WHAT IS THREAT EXACTLY?
somebody call?

Pretty silly from what I've heard. Americans are terrified about everything.

Looks like we have entered a new norm here in the US, it will not be long before we end up looking like and acting like Israel on a given day.

Our's are mostly home grown.

Surely it's sensible to be terrified by bombs? Just like crocodiles and active volcanoes.

True. How can anyone dismiss this as over reaction without knowing specifics?

As for it looking like Israel. I lived two years in Israel. Violence was much lower than in the USA. An armed, educated population precluded anymore than a half dozen murders from nut bars. Any attacker was shot dead within seconds.

Yes, in a way.
Yet, the odds of being killed by a bomb, a crocodile, or an active volcano are way less than the odds of being killed in a car crash or by disease caused by smoking or obesity.

On the other hand, no one wants to risk a school being blown up with students in attendance.

I'd look for this scenario being repeated in the future.

So, are we winning the "war on terror"?

Sensibly Israel limits its citizens to 50 rounds of ammo a year.

Meanwhile, New York got the same threat and said "get the @!#$ out of here!"

Risk is a complicated subject. No American was killed by a nuclear weapon during the Cold War yet 50 million may have been killed in a blink. Are cars more dangerous than H Bombs?....depends.

The issue with Islamic terrorism is 'potential' risk. We don't have the luxury of not keeping a cap on a potential lethal attack via chemical, biological , nuclear, etc.

To borrow from John Paul Jones, I hope we have just begun to fight.

I hate to give light to this, but you're probably right that this scenario will be repeated. But as you say, we're talking about the safety of children, and it's now known that the male San Bernardino terrorist had images of local schools on his phone. That clearly was purposeful, so perhaps better to err on the side of an "abundance of caution."

Think about the resources needed to sweep 900 schools. Very disturbing.

New Yorkers are my favorite kind of liberals/moderates. They don't take any ****.
