Republican officials and leading figures in the party’s establishment are now preparing for the possibility of a brokered convention as Donald Trump continues sit atop the polls and the presidential race.

That would spell the death of the Republican Party for 2016.

If Trump goes Independent... he might be able to pull off a victory as a third party candidate... at worst... Hillary wins... as Bill did thanks to Perot.

When will they realize that Trump is a byproduct of an Establishment-hating populous.

If they pull this stunt, it will only solidify most people's opinion that they are not our representative.

It looks bad for the US. Neither party is producing a half good candidate for the job. It is quite shabby.

They tried that in 1964, when William Scranton attempted to derail Barry Goldwater's nomination. That failed badly then, and will fail badly now, with very negative consequences for the GOP. Trump will, no doubt run third party and split the Republican vote. Without coat tails to help them, many Republican candidates who are down the ladder will lose their offices, and Democrats could end up taking back both the Senate and House. A brokered convention is the last thing that would help the Republican Party. A Trump nomination, if it happens, would be orders of magnitude better than the blowback that the GOP will suffer if they attempt to broker the convention.

What I don't get is why the GOP is just so determined to stop Trump. If the GOP establishment could force Mitt Romney down the throats of the GOP then they should be willing to accept anyone. Trump isn't half as awful as Romney.

Talking about a brokered convention before a single primary has happened is laughable...

Because it would be a Democratic presidency, once again.

Not gonna happen. They all signed contracts, just like Trump.

If he's ahead, the rest of the party has to support him. Simple as that.

They must have thought they were getting away with something by making him sign that agreement. His lawyers are already looking at what the GOP is doing.

It won't happen. Priebus won't let it happen. He knows Trump is the only one who can beat Hillary. He's not going to destroy the GOP's last chance just because Jeb and Kasich are whining.

No, you're misunderstanding the situation. Mitt Romney was an awful candidate to an epic degree and he was forced down the throats of the GOP masses. Trump is not as bad as Romney. Furthermore the GOP establishment was backing JEB! and so we know that the GOP establishment has bad judgement. Reince Preibus is a clown and the GOP is really missing out on the leadership that Micheal Steele brought them.

That comment is sheer idiocy and delusion. Priebus knows that Trump is the death of Republican chances in 2016 and not just for the Presidency.

You honestly believe that Trump with his xenophobic ideas and his isolationist nonsense actually has a chance to get as many votes as Romney did?

Romney was bland and relatively harmless. Trump is a 'meglomanic' ding dong.

Even important Republicans (who are not whackos, cowards or just plain dumb) are distancing themselves from Trump's extremist whackadoodle stuff. If mainstream reps don't like him - how the heck do you think dems will view him?

If Trump gets the nomination, I believe he will scare many Dems from voting for the Reps for possibly a generation. That is why, imo, the Rep leaders are so scared of this guy running....because of the immense damage he could do to the party's future. Romney had an outside chance at the White House. This guy has ZERO (despite the polls that mean nothing until the primaries get going fully).

And if he runs as an independent, I highly doubt he will even get 15%...that is about all the ding dong's out there who I think could possibly support this bizarre man.

Donald Trump could single-handedly, imo, mark the end of the Republican Party's chances of gaining back the White House for a decade. Not that the odds were great to start with. But with this guy, they are downright horrible.

I must admit, when all this started, I had no idea Trump was this out of it. I could not figure out why the Rep leaders seemed SO terrified of him winning. Now I understand completely why they were scared. This glorified used car salesman with the mentality of a 12 year old is an incredibly superficial, ignorant, delusional jerk who surrounds himself with yes people because he cannot stand the truth about himself or his views. And he is clearly the Reps worst nightmare right now.

Nope. Priebus knows that Trump is the only one who can beat Hillary. I think he learned a little from the last two LIBERAL RINOS who the GOP nominated. He's not going to make the same mistake again.

Trump is going to be nominated and he's going to win. He is the Republican party's only hope.

Well, we disagree. And I hope for the sake of your great country, you're dead wrong.

I don't wish any person harm, but I'd say that if Donald Trump continues on the road he's chosen in this campaign, he may find himself with the same result as George Wallace, or perhaps worse. Tensions in your country are such that it could happen.

Most of America believes it.

Romney was a liberal RINO. Trump is the next Reagan.

Democrats are terrified of Trump. They know he's immune to the left wing drive by media. They're watching his poll numbers go up and they're realizing that the empty pantsuit is going to get her communist ass kicked all over the country.

If Trump gets the nomination, he will scare many Dems from voting for the Reps for possibly a generation.

Only those who are in this country illegally, who voted illegally in the last election. Those rank and file Democrats who work for a living and pay taxes will vote for Trump.

He won't.

Donald Trump is the Republican Party's LAST CHANCE. If he isn't nominated, the Silent Majority will never support a Republican

Nope. Trump said the agreement is now null and void, since the other candidates have "unfairly attacked him", thus violating the agreement.

I'm just curious, was Jimmy Carter and the then Democrat congress of 1979 xenophobic when they deported 15,000 Iranians back to Iran for being, . . . Iranian?

Are the 47 Democrats that voted to stop all Syrian and Iraqi refugees from entering the country back on November 19th xenophobic?

Yeah, except it won't split the party's vote this time. If they try this the actual party will go Bull Moose on their asses (the current leadership). It's no longer that they fear losing the general election but that they fear losing their positions, their jobs. People have threatened many times in the past to cut bait and vote the bums out. This time they are getting the message we're serious. Our way or the highway fellas. Get onboard or each failed tactic to hold control will be just another nail in your political coffin.

Yes, because his ideas are neither of those. You've bought the opposition and MSM koolaid, both who feel extremely threatened.
