slippery slope...I think there should be an IQ test and no I'm not kidding

as for mental stability I think it is too hard to measure at this point with our limited understanding of the human mind BUT if a number of people show concern regarding self harm or aggression it should be an alert ... but I don't know where one would go from there

I have what is considered a high IQ. I don't go around shooting people. I would guess that an investigation of Mensa members would not turn up many nut job shooters. I would assume that similar studies of below average IQ's would turn up similar results.

I'm not aware of any correlation between IQ and murder.

I'm not aware of any correlation between IQ and murder either but I am certain there would be a good chance of it for accidental deaths and bad judgement deaths. I personally think everyone running around Rambo style thinking they need to protect themselves is certainly NOT a solution to domestic terrorism and yet many think it is.

I think many would love to go back to the days of hips loaded with six shooters. I think they truly believe it will solve everything and keep them safe.

I can't tell if you are a believer or have tongue firmly in cheek.... :confused:

Secret Societies are popular- from Masons to Manchurian Candidates... when the extreme right wing wasn't accusing McCain of fathering his adopted black baby, they claimed he was brainwashed by the Commies when a POW in the Vietnam war.

The Tavistock group is 'credited' with using the Beatles to destroy society and taking over the educational systems with brainwashed teachers to destroy the American family... oh a a few right wing nuts accuse the Royal family of financing the Port Arthur Massacre project.

Again all noble subjects for a vast conspiracy project... :roll: but for reals bro, that requires a HUGE number of subjects to be closeted, brain washed and then returned to society when it comes to our educational system... FAR more effiecient would be to target a few with a far bigger reach than 20 kids in a classroom...

And for that matter a half washed brain in a simple single attack candidate. I'd look carefully into the pasts of Trump, Cruz, Rand, and even though he is fading in the pools- Dr. Carson. I mean a highly educated and skilled doctor who believes the burial chambers of the Pharohs could have been grain silos built by a jewish man....

As they say, there is a thin line between genius and madness. (Please bear in mind I'm not accusing you of being a madman, you seem like a very decent person :2razz: ) but by implementing an IQ test as any sort of metric leaves open the possibility that someone who is "too smart" might be flagged as a potential psychiatric anomaly. Lord knows with the way society is going it would almost be a curse to pop out with a 180 IQ, it would (I assume) be maddening.

I agree. Sal was suggesting that an IQ test could weed out prospective misuser's of guns. Aside from too smart, the opposite could well be a moving number.

It isn't a terrible idea, if just for the fact that (in my experience) more intelligent people tend to put more thought into the consequences of thier actions and act less emotionally. In fact, and I'll dig up some cite or study if necessary, there is a proven correlation between extremely high IQ with proportionally low EQ (emotional quotient). The odds of someone with a very high IQ and equally low EQ are very unlikely to use a gun, or anything else, to commit what are usually emotionally driven crimes.

We don't need to defend against a Tory tyranny, we just voted one out. The Whigs won the last election by a landslide over the Tories.
I like our gun laws just fine except I'd like to be able to use handguns hunting. Bowhunting elk, in grizz country, would be a little less tense with a '44 Mag. backup.
Is Switzerland more free than, say, Belgium? Or Scotland or France? Or does freedom equal access to guns? Because, given the violent nature of American society I can see why you need to be armed and why you would resist being unarmed but, honestly, that 'Tory tyranny' argument is getting kind of threadbare. Nobody is going to establish themself as a totalitarian dictator and need to be resisted by a heroic, well-armed populace. You all need guns to protect yourselves from each other. And I understand that. But it's not that way everywhere.

Self-evidently, it does for some. Personally, I feel a great degree of freedom in not having to worry about gun crime on a day-to-day basis. I think many gun fans are slaves to their fear and paranoia.
