Black Friday breaks record with 185,000 gun background checks

More Americans had their backgrounds checked purchasing guns on Black Friday than any day on record, according to data released by the FBI this week.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System processed 185,345 requests on Nov. 27, one of the largest retail sales days in the country.

"This was an approximate 5% increase over the 175,754 received on Black Friday 2014," wrote Stephen Fischer, the FBI's chief of multimedia productions. "The previous high for receipts were the 177,170 received on 12/21/2012."

Previous spikes for background checks, conducted before a gun buyer can obtain a firearm, occurred after prominent mass shootings, like in December 2012 in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

This is not about deer hunting, or sporting clays, it's about self defense. What are Americans afraid of, and why ?

We have a traitor of a president who wants to bring in ISIS members in that Syrian refugee hoax. The country has become much more dangerous.

Yeah yeah and Bush did 9/11 and Kennedy was killed by the CIA. Wrong forum, dude.

your question assumes facts not in evidence. more and more people are buying guns apparently, despite liberals who want to claim that gun ownership is declining. Gun sports are increasing. but the fact is, we have a president whose main pavlovian proclivity is to yap about gun bans every time some nut case shoots people

Our family didnt celebrate Black Friday by buying new guns. 16 of us went into the hill sides and spent about 6 hours shooting things. A great time was had by all.

Its not like we need an excuse to buy new guns! ;)

Its really not hard to understand why so many people are buying guns. The greatest gun salesman in the world is in the WH announcing his intent to target firearms. Considering how ****ed up everything he has touched has become, thats not a biscuit they want to try...not even with butter and honey. Threaten gun control, people tend to respond.

Not all guns are about self defense. There are target pistols and rifles, collector guns, odd guns. It not much different from car collectors. I wonder if a record was broken for flat screens or computers.

Prove there are no ISIS members among those refugees, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WORLD NEWS MEDIA REPORTED ISIS MEMBERS ON EACH BOAT TRYING TO CONVERT THOSE REFUGEES.

Oh, and I guess the Paris shootings didn't really happen.

:lamo

Yeah, the hypothetical possibility of ISIS infiltrators is the key point here. :lamo

Prove you aren't a member of ISIS.

I wonder how many of those background checks cleared people for purchase, and then how many of those cleared are people with mental illnesses that wouldn't have been culled because there's no EMR data base for persons with mental illness for the background checkers to view?

Your incessant ignorance isnt helping the pro gun cause...

Sorry bud, but legal DUE PROCESS is required for denying rights.

If theyre adjudicated mentally incompetent, then that would be acceptable.

That's my point. I want an EMR data base for those with mental illness to hold psychiatrists responsible to do their jobs. Too often they write their notes in a file and stick them in a cabinet, and their diagnosis isn't available or presented for adjudication. As such, mental cases like Holmes walk into the Bass Pro shop and purchase guns and ammo and then go to the theater and shoot 100 people.

Perhaps you could get the ACLU to take up the case. I'm guessing they are more interested in protecting the rights of the mentally ill, rather than the possible safety of citizens. After all, it was the ACLU who forced the mentally ill out onto the streets.

I agree with you that the ACLU hasn't been helpful in this. At some point your safety trumps their "rights"

The problem is, the grey area contained in the part of your post I have in bold above, is swimming with schools of "sharks" I don't think anyone wants to toy with.

That's where you'd be wrong. Besides myself, there are plenty of others that want us to stop allowing people with mental illnesses to walk into Gander Mountain and purchase a gun and ammo to then go commit mass murder with.

I'm going to go out on a limb and offer that pretty much everybody wants to stop allowing people with mental illnesses to walk into Gander Mountain and purchase a gun and ammo to then go commit mass murder with.

So, while you can attempt to imply there are people who believe in the 2nd amendment and don't care who buys guns, that is just your agenda at work. The problem is there are mentally ill people who have rights, and your suggestion they be violated is the challenge, not the 2nd Amendment, and not your view of gun rights supporters.

And I'll saw that limb off for you. Those that consider that people with mental illness have an equal second amendment right as those that don't have no suggestions of how to prevent gun sales to the crazies in our midst. You guys don't know how to prevent it. But this is how the arena of ideas works, we lobby according to our views. America decided long ago that felons should be denied their second amendment rights. I don't agree with that unless they are felon by virtue of having committed a crime with a gun, but I can't do anything about that, often as I've complained about it. Psychiatrists are routinely failing to steer the mentally ill towards adjudication, and I believe that an EMR data base would go a long way towards that, and that's what I'll continue to argue for.

Although not completely analogous, this really is no different from people rushing out to stock up on incandescent light bulbs when government threatens to ban them or has instituted a ban on the manufacturing of new stock. People like what they have and don't like government taking it away from them and so they stock up on those things if they are threatened with losing them or not being able to buy them in the future.

As others have said, President Obama threatening to act outside the law and ignoring Congress is the best sales pitch any gun manufacturer could ever ask for.

The Constitution is protected from people who would willingly saw a limb from it. So get busy, you have a Constitutional Convention to organize if you want to change how peoples rights are protected.

People have rights in the United States. They may have only those Putin is willing to offer in Russia, but here, mentally ill or not, they have rights.

The big question is how to keep the mentally ill from harming others. Lot's of suggestions have been made, and in some cases, actions taken. In California, I believe a new law has been passed that allows the testimony of family members to cause the removal of guns if a family member is claimed to be mentally unfit. This stemmed from the shooting at UC Santa Barbara. It's controversial, if one can think objectively about it. This may be one of many steps that could address this issue.

Of course, all this has nothing to do with a motivated assailant with the will and the means to carry out their objective.

Thing about these background checks.. How much longer do you think it will be before the Feds start including your records of speech and thought to their "background" assessments when you go to purchase a firearm? You know they'd love that.
