NATO invites Montenegro to join alliance, defying Russia | Reuters

NATO invited tiny Montenegro on Wednesday to join the military alliance in its first expansion since 2009, defying Russian warnings that enlargement of the U.S.-led bloc further into the Balkans is "irresponsible" action that undermines trust.

In a scripted session at NATO's headquarters in Brussels, Montenegro's Foreign Minister Igor Luksic strode into the imposing conference hall to loud applause from his peers as NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg declared: "This is the beginning of a very beautiful alliance."
Thoughts are?

I think Russia itself isn't the problem. Namely, the real threat - Russian Trojan Horses, such as Hungarian terrorists (HIVM).

If its what Montenegro wants then why not ?

Shes surrounded by NATO countries anyway

If that is what she wants? The western government cartel only tolerate followers not independent leaders.

It clearly is a **** you move against Russia, and it is of no shock that Russia responded the way it did. Given where Montenegro is in relation to other NATO allies this is not all that big of a deal, given the size (as in both geographic and strategic importance) of Montenegro then this *really* is not all that big of a deal.

It is making the news because this is another round of our renewed Cold War with Putin and Russia, and the whole thing stinks of "look at what we are doing over here (so you will ignore what I am doing somewhere else.)"

So do you have any evidence the West forced Montenegro to join against her wishes ?

If the Montenegrinos have any sense, they'll politely refuse the invite.

Wouldn't put it past Russia to "encourage" unrest.

As though the US has never encouraged unrest where we've sought to pursue our "interests"

i'm tired of military alliances at this point. they pretty much guarantee constant war, as somebody in the alliance inevitably gets ****ed with. then the other alliance wants to prove that its dick is bigger.

My largest objection to NATO is the military spending requirements imposed on member states, but the organization as a whole is outdated in post-Cold War society. Hopefully, the Montenegrins decline to join the alliance, but the problem is that in Eastern European countries (and as I understand it this is the case in Montenegro), politics is divided along pro-European and pro-Russia lines, which means that a coalition willing to reject this is likely to drift towards Russia's sphere of influence, unfortunately.

I think NATO should be disbanded.

It is a provocative offense to Russia.

There is no Warsaw Pact anymore so there is no need of any more NATO.

Thank you.

Another reason that NATO is useless is because the NATO allies are useless.

Not only that but NATO is a needless and meaningless treaty affiliation which is as precarious as the pre WW1 alliances.
