Sheldon Silver, an assemblyman who rose from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to become one of New York State’s most powerful politicians, was found guilty on Monday in a federal corruption trial, ending a case that was the capstone of the government’s efforts to expose the seamy culture of influence peddling in Albany.

Mr. Silver, 71, a Democrat who served more than two decades as the Assembly speaker before he was forced to resign after his arrest in January, will automatically forfeit the Assembly seat to which he was first elected nearly 40 years ago.
A substantial fine, similiar to RICO, on graft and such. Leave the thief penniless.
And never released from prison.

Fines? He should serve a lengthy prison sentence.

Sadly, here in America, the more you steal and the higher your position you do it from, the less time you face.

I updated the post - Thought I had it in it. Thanks for noting that error.
The SOB, in a position of trust, well let him rot

Sentences in Canada are a joke for this type of crime.

Denny Hastert (R) raped a boy repeatedly, paid him millions to keep him quiet and got away with it (mostly).

There's a two tier justice system in America.

What does that case have to do with this one? Oh, I get it. Republicans are crooks too, but the topic is about the Democrat who got busted this time.

The topic is about corrupt politicians of any stripe. A sub topic is a lack of equity under the law for American citizens. A sub,sub topic is that this is why the death penalty must be abolished.

That is an allegation by the supposed victims sister. The alleged victim himself died years before any allegations ever came forward and no court case has even been attempted towards the crime or ever will be due to the victims death. I don't even believe there is any evidence that any sexual misconduct actually took place, but I might be wrong on that.

OK, I understand that, but I also understand that, whenever someone from one political party gets busted, people point to the other political party and say "Well, look what he did". IMHO, it somewhat derails the topic at hand, because it usually leads to people pointing fingers at each other instead of discussing the topic. However your point, although I disagree with it, is fair.

In this case, I am willing to bet that a couple of the charges are tied to organized crime.

Your sub topic is about an entirely different matter that has nothing to do with political corruption.

He was and is a pedo attracted to young boys. He didn't give away millions in structured payments out of the goodness of his heart. Incidentally, where did he get those millions? Off the teat of conservative lobbyists.

I disagree. The topic has many dimensions and sub levels.

I have no idea if he is a pedo or not, but it should be noted that the allegation of hush money is not the allegation of rape and can not be treated as such.

Anyway, if I'm not mistaken the alleged victim was a teenager at the time and therefore you can not use any rape or attraction has evidence of the alleged rapist being a pedophile.

Would you care to stay on topic?

He admitted to an inappropriate relationship with an underage boy. Statutory rape.

Politicians and the rich don't do hard time. He'll be bunking with Bernie Madoff at Camp Cupcake.

And you continue to prove how lame your post was pointing at the other party to cover for a corrupt politician while claiming that you aren't doing exactly that. Nobody even mentioned party until you did.

You are trying to derail the thread.

Karma is always a bitch. Short term thinking was his problem. Nothing like instant gratification.

Fail the OP mentioned his political affiliation which is irrelevant to political centrists like myself. Though I do enjoy mocking social conservatives who rape young boys.

Not to worry, the NYS Senate Leader is also up on corruption charges (A republican). We are equal opportunity here in NY.

And you call yourself a centrist? I am a brain surgeon as much as you are a centrist.

You must have some kind of "Foundation" for that belief. LOL.

Asimov Rocks!!

I can't believe this got into a left vs right argument-NOT.
