Marketing is a young man's game as far as the visual dimensions of the trade are concerned. New artists bring new understandings of history with them. This however is dangerous in that sometimes a lot of the agencies and departments that these artists work for do not grasp the importance behind the imagery because it feels like it happened too long ago.
When that happens, we get situations like this. It was good of Amazon to remove the ads but I would definitely have a talk with the team that put this campaign together and brainstorm ways of not insulting... Jewish people, American vets, homosexuals, Russians, and pretty much anybody who had to suffer or fight back against Nazi Germany.... all... at the same time.
That said, the show is pretty good.
It's a jarring ad, but one not completely inappropriate considering the show's subject matter: an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1962 novel about a dystopian future where the Allied Powers lost World War II.
But many are saying that Amazon crossed the line with the Man in the High Castle campaign that saw the 42nd St. MTA Shuttle in New York wrapped in Nazi and Imperial Japanese imagery.
