Pew found that slightly more than 1 million Mexicans and their families, including American-born children, left the U.S. for Mexico from 2009 to 2014. During the same time, 870,000 Mexicans came to the U.S., resulting in a net flow to Mexico of 140,000.

A half-century of mass migration from Mexico is "at an end," said Mark Hugo Lopez, Pew's director of Hispanic research.

A combination of factors has contributed to the mass exodus of illegal aliens back to their home countries.

1) ICE, under the Obama administration, has deported more illegals than any other administration before his. This has actually become a bone of contention with many Democrats, who refer to the president as the Deporter In Chief.

2) The Great Recession and the sluggish recovery has closed the door on jobs for many illegals, who went back home after not being able to make a living in the US.

3) Border enforcement is at an all time high.

4) The Mexican economy is improving, which has resulted in fewer illegals attempting to cross the border.

Put is all together, and what we have is an end to an to an era of mass migration to the United States. There is yet another upside to this trend. When a low-skilled job becomes available, it is more likely that an American takes it than an illegal. This is another factor in the drop in unemployment in the United States. The problem we have now is mass migration from Central and South America. Border patrol agents are actually arresting more of them at the border than Mexicans. But, overall, the trend is more illegals exiting the country than entering.

Looking at what an immigration crisis Europe is having with islamic migrants not being able to assimilate into secular culture, it looks pretty silly to shout about Mexicans.

I like this part.

Still, it's this lack of jobs in the U.S. - not family ties - that is mostly motivating Mexicans to leave, said Dowell Myers, a public policy professor at the University of Southern California. Construction is a huge draw for young immigrants, but has yet to approach the levels of last decade's housing boom, he said.

"It's not like all of a sudden they decided they missed their mothers," Myers said. "The fact is, our recovery from the Great Recession has been miserable. It's been miserable for everyone."

Also, Mexico's population is aging, meaning there's less competition for young people looking for work there. That's a big change from the 1990s, when many people entering the workforce felt they had no choice but to migrate north of the border, Myers said.

"The main reason for my return is family," José Arellano Correa, a 41-year-old Mexico City taxi driver who came back from the U.S. in 2005. "I could help them while I was there, but family comes before money."

They're still illegals. We shouldn't judge our problems by comparing them to Europe. Especially since Europe invited their problems onto themselves.

Haha, of course we need to have some perspective. Europe has islamic migrants coming in and spreading wahabism, not adapting, etc. We have Mexicans who come and work for less than the minimum wage. Let's stop freaking out about Mexicans, and be thankful we don't actually have mosques preaching hate in most cities.

With the exception of construction, Mexicans are not competing for living wage jobs. It's the South Asians coming here legally that are being hired for engineering and tech jobs. There is no way a college grad born here in the states is willing to work 70 hours a week for $40,000 a year.

Again, if you don't know how many are entering the country, how can you say more are leaving.

Also if people leave on their own, who records that that person has left?

I wish I could like this dozens of times. Everyone is screaming about Latino undocumented, thinking they negatively effect the economy when in fact it's telecommuting college grads, legal immigrants, and somewhat illegal immigrants/visitors (come in on travel visas and work for 6 months on projects and such) who are taking the livable wage jobs that Americans are qualified for and want, but not at under an effective $8 or $9 an hour.

I used to laugh when white, middle class, American males would complain about illegal workers taken their job but I stopped laughing when the industry I'm in became flooded with Asian and South Asians with work visas who are willing to work 14 hour days, 7 days a week, for as you point out is about minimum wage.

That, is very interesting. I didn't see in the article where it credited border enforcement though as part of the cause, and I fail to see how stopping more entry's causes more to leave. Did I miss that, or have you another source for that?

That's interesting, didn't realize that was going on.

Come on man, when you enter this country illegally you are required by law to report to the official illegal alien counting station. Same thing when you leave. I thought everybody knew this.

It may be the case, but this particular article doesn't state that enforcement is at an all time high, or that Obama is doing a better job of enforcing border security than his predecessors.

It does state that he has deported more than any before him.

Bingo... hence the Colorado Pot Growers Co-op comment.

The article seems soooo whacked out. Unbelievable. Did Jayson Blair write it? It seems like somebody is making a lot of **it up... as one tsunami of illegals after another washes up across the border.

Simply unbelievable.

Both types increase profits for US businesses. And guess which party sponsored the work visa programs for cheap labor? (Hint: profits for...businesses...)
