Pew found that slightly more than 1 million Mexicans and their families, including American-born children, left the U.S. for Mexico from 2009 to 2014. During the same time, 870,000 Mexicans came to the U.S., resulting in a net flow to Mexico of 140,000.
A half-century of mass migration from Mexico is "at an end," said Mark Hugo Lopez, Pew's director of Hispanic research.
A combination of factors has contributed to the mass exodus of illegal aliens back to their home countries.
1) ICE, under the Obama administration, has deported more illegals than any other administration before his. This has actually become a bone of contention with many Democrats, who refer to the president as the Deporter In Chief.
2) The Great Recession and the sluggish recovery has closed the door on jobs for many illegals, who went back home after not being able to make a living in the US.
3) Border enforcement is at an all time high.
4) The Mexican economy is improving, which has resulted in fewer illegals attempting to cross the border.
Put is all together, and what we have is an end to an to an era of mass migration to the United States. There is yet another upside to this trend. When a low-skilled job becomes available, it is more likely that an American takes it than an illegal. This is another factor in the drop in unemployment in the United States. The problem we have now is mass migration from Central and South America. Border patrol agents are actually arresting more of them at the border than Mexicans. But, overall, the trend is more illegals exiting the country than entering.
