France bombs ISIS Stronghold in Raqqa. [W:186]

The begging question is, how do they still have strongholds?

How after over a year of bombing in Iraq and Syria can ISIS have any large grouping of fighters/stores/HQ?

If the bombing campaign was planned to actually work ISIS should have been reduced to small unit operations blending in with the noncombatant civilians

If containment was the name of the game, there'd still be Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Assad practicing it. They've been removed you may have forgotten, and the Islamic extremists organised the Islamic State and have been wrecking havoc ever sense. ;)

Because there are no ground troops to take over the area and "mop up". Since the west is not coordinating with Assad or the Russians, then this will continue. ISIS is in the perfect situation.. it has the Kurds to the north who are in part getting hammered by Turkey, it is clear on to east because that is where ISIS in Iraq is, and to the south it has other rebel groups in a buffer for the most part between Assad and them. And it is not like the other rebel groups have the capacity to take on ISIS or even enter their territory.

Yep, the nighty Obama coalition had them "contained" earlier the same day that some of the JV stragglers decided to act up in Paris. Perhaps leveling anything and everything that flies the ISIS flag in Syria and Iraq would be a good start.

And Isis has thrived in the vacuum caused by their removal. At least outside of Egypt

That's right, none of which were organised and operational on this scale pre regime change of Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Assad.

murderous assholes popping up in the vacuum created by other murderous assholes exiting the stage means what?.... we should ignore murderous assholes and let them do as they please?

I think that they know that this battle for a State will take decades and that they are hoping to lure us into a battle so that they can regruit more and more suicidal attackers like Paris that will pop up all over the West... then we focus on that and they arise in the M.E. as our rights are diminished by laws and check points

I'm sure that France can out escalate ISIS, and that ISIS will be on the losing end of that one. Frankly, ISIS should be squeezed to death via every available avenue until they cease to exist, or at least cease to be a threat and cease to be a force.

For France military operations are very expensive, while for ISIS fairly cheap. Given France's current economic condition they could go broke trying to out escalate ISIS
