Americans becoming less religious, especially young adults: poll

'Americans are becoming less religious, judging by such markers as church attendance, prayer and belief in God, and the trend is more pronounced among young adults, according to a poll released on Tuesday.

The share of U.S. adults who say they believe in God, while still high compared with other advanced industrial countries, slipped to 89 percent in 2014 from 92 percent in 2007, according to the Pew Research Center's Religious Landscape Study.

The proportion of Americans who say they are "absolutely certain" God exists fell even more, to 63 percent in 2014 from 71 percent in 2007.

The percentage of Americans who pray every day, attend religious services regularly and consider religion important in their lives are down by small, but statistically significant measures, the survey found.

The trend is most pronounced among young adults, with only half of those born from 1990 to 1996 absolutely certain of their belief in God, compared to 71 percent of the "silent generation," or those born from 1928 to 1945.'

Thank God.

The sooner all this God Club nonsense ends, the better off humanity will be.

Are you watching this Republican leaders...the God Club stuff is on the wane - especially amongst the young.

If you want to get back into the White House any time soon, you had better stop Bible thumping.

I follow the Anti God Club here in Europe and must say that the Godless are no better than the others. .

If you are fed up with theocratic rule then why not do something about it?

You could be talking

There,

After editing the rest now your claim is also ambiguous. Now it sounds like a query whether I could be "talking" or not. See how editing puts claims out of context?

Similarly, I specified what I was talking about in brackets and did not let it to be too ambiguous as implied in this post.

This is interesting because religion, itself, is founded on intolerance. Intolerance of thoughts or acts outside the system of belief, and intolerance of beliefs that oppose a person's specific religious belief.

And has evolved. Just like leaders - political- religious who used religion as a base for their hatred.

If the Far Right in the US had not coopted the Christian religion by shouting the loudest, and screaming that this and that is immoral, many more people would probably buy in. It's like the GOP in general, Christian loudmouths have chased away many potential supporters and converts with their "hate speech."

Right Wing extremists are busy purging from the party all Republicans in name only Not to be forgotten, they have already chased off most of the Blacks, Latinos, Gays, youth and womem. Evangelical Christians are doing the same with Christianity. They have their own version of the RINO, the CINO. The current pope is the most notable name on that list.

First if all, don't get defensive. Relax.

Why am I pushing this? You mentioned how you admired the beauty of the cathedrals, the art, the music, etc. So you seemed to understand the "what" of it all, but I didn't get the impression that you understood the "why." That's been my entire point from my first post in this thread when you quoted it and said you didn't understand.

Okay, it's hard to relax here, but I will try. Sorry. I get it now. Thanks.

It helps to remove the chip from one's shoulder before shooting off. Why should conservatives not hold conservative beliefs and traditional ethics? Funny the way people are so intolerant of others but call themselves liberal. One gets the impression they are bigots.

So, on one hand they cannot control you and you are free, but on the other hand asking them to step down would end in you sacrificing your life. So the question is stated is "for what?"

Perhaps one needs to consider that if asking power to step down leads to sacrifice/death that they may not be entirely free?

The pyramids are a beautiful sight to behold, and they were built for religious purposes too. That doesn't mean it was time, energy, money, etc. well spent.

Well, considering that "Memphis and its Necropolis - the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur" is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, I beg to differ. And that cathedral I mentioned earlier? The one where I had my Bach epiphany? It was one of the original 12 World Heritage sites (Exploring the World's First 12 Heritage Sites--CNN). So, out of all of the places on this planet, natural or not, deemed fit to list and preserve for future generations, someone seemed to think these places were of special value to the human race. I mean, I don't always agree with the good folks at the UN, but this one I think they got right.

It's not my problem that the far right CINO's took over Christianity and in their zealous fervor chased away all the youth and other potential converts. THe sooner the stupid superstition dies the better.

Hundreds of thousands of people dedicated for several generation building mountains of stone in the desert just so that they could entomb their king---no wonder the civilization turned to **** and ended up sacked by the Romans.

Now there were a practical lot--Romans.

That certainly doesn't sound persuasive. It also doesn't jell with certain studies done in Germany that seem to indicate that the exodus from Christian churches is not due to church activities but to a general loss of importance to the life of the population.

That 'war machine' is what has kept the democracies free. Freedom and democracy are not the natural order of things, and take up very little space in the human history.

Wrong, speaking for my country, few of our wars have had anything to do with freedom, and whether or not that's acceptable to you is irrelevant to me, see. ;)

The Christian message, if not polluted by the Hard Right, is a very appealing one. Who wouldn't get on board with eternal forgiveness from a kind and loving god? That the religion is not flourishing is, without question, the fault of those hard liners who ruined said message with a bunch of "hate the fags and baby killers" crap.

They should, and we wish they would.

Setting aside the obvious fact that you certainly don't speak for your country, the significant wars had everything to do with freedom.

Says the Canadian that speaks for America every day. Your wrong about American wars and really know nothing of them. Btw, did you notice you have a new, liberal PM? Just helping you out since you don't have time to stay abreast of the happenings in your own yard.

The Egyptians built something remarkable while perfecting their math and engineering skills, unlike the vast majority of humans who manage to leave a legacy of nothing but excrement. But thanks for the history lesson! :2wave:

There is a lesson there. Unlike the Egyptians, Ceaser didn't bother so much with arts, math and science as he did engineering a war machine. In the end, his team won. And, a few hundred years after that, his team got fat and lazy, and a bunch of Visigoths in animal skins rolled over what was left of Rome. There is definitely a lesson there for a now fat and lazy USA.
