'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admits in

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

Why come out with a statement like this now? Not logical for any reason I can think of.....

He wants to be invited to parties.

The truth has been gnawing at Blair and he couldn't take it any longer.

Blair had a "McCarthy" moment .

He would have been better to confess it to a priest! This is not good!

You may be right Lady Polgara.

It certainly makes the West look bad in the eyes of the folks in the Middle East and the rest of the World .

Nonsense. It makes Blair look like a sissy. Nothing more.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm? Shall we all go home now and be friends from now on?:

Tony was accustomed to being with the cool kids. He wants that more than anything.

I'll grant that politics don't always have to make sense, and let it go at that....

I AGREE. I remember the first press conference that Blair and Bush gave together. The only thing they had in common was mentioned that they used the same toothpaste.

I can't help but wonder how many people around the world are now shaking their heads and saying WTH?! He may not only be a sissy, but a very stupid sissy, IMO.

Tony Blair has finally said sorry for the Iraq War – and admitted he could be partly to blame for the rise of Islamic State>

<The extraordinary confession by the former Prime Minister comes after 12 years in which he refused to apologise for the conflict.
Blair makes his dramatic ‘mea culpa’ during a TV interview about the ‘hell’ caused by his and George Bush’s decision to oust Saddam Hussein.>

<In the exchange, Blair repeatedly says sorry for his conduct and even refers to claims that the invasion was a war ‘crime’ – while denying he committed one.>

<Challenged that the Iraq War was ‘the principal cause’ of the rise of Islamic State, he said: ‘I think there are elements of truth in that.>

<A 2002 briefing note from US Secretary of State Colin Powell to the President showed Blair had secretly pledged to back the conflict – while telling MPs and British voters that he was seeking a diplomatic solution>

It's good that a politician from the West has finally admitted that their collective foreign policy has helped to proliferate terrorism.

Will it change anything? Nope, not until all the Western powers stop their overseas military interventions.

Blair has a conscience, typical for a liberal.

Something GOP warmongering and fearmongering MIC supporters and chickenhawks wouldn't know about .

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

Oh, well the OP laments about it being "too bad it had to be someone across the pond", so I figured maybe Hillary can take the reins on this side of the pond since she is currently the most prominent public person to have authorized war in Iraq.

No, the most prominent public person to have authorized the war in Iraq is the man who was president when it started, George W. Bush. BTW, his brother, Jeb, has already gone on record as supporting that war as well. Perhaps you'd prefer to discuss this in one of the hundreds of bash-Hillary threads scattered throughout the forum for your HRC-bashing pleasure?

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

All the Western countries along with others in the Middle East were in agreement that Saddam was a threat. He was allowing training of al Qaeda in his country. He was paying families who would sacrifice one of their children to be a suicide bomber to attack Americans. Did you all forget that one? He was funneling money to terrorists to attack our men in Afghanistan. Oh what a short memory some have......

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

I wonder if Hillary will apologize while on the campaign trail.

It would be better if she dropped dead while on the campaign trail.

Maybe she could hit her head on another toilet seat or something....

Not to mention he gassed Kurdish civilians and organized systematic torturing camps throughout his time as president. So what is Blair really apologizing about?

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

What happened to the previous positions held by Blair (taken from the OP source):

'I will not apologise for the conflict. I believe it was right.' House of Commons 2004

‘I don’t think we should be apologising at all for what we are doing in Iraq. We should be immensely proud. I can’t take responsibility for people sending car bombs into a market place.’ TV interview , 2007

I may have been wrong, but I did what I thought was right for our country.’ When he resigned as PM, 2007

[If he had known there were no WMDs] ‘I would still have thought it right to remove Saddam.’ TV interview, 2009

‘It was a headline question. It had to have a headline answer. Answer “Yes” and I knew the outcome: “Blair apologises for war”, “At last he says sorry”. I can’t say sorry in words; I can only hope to redeem something from the tragedy of death, in the actions of a life, my life, that continues still.’ Memoirs , 2010

‘When people say to me, “Do you regret removing him”, my answer is, “No – how can you regret removing somebody who was a monster?” ’ TV interview , 2013

So now the position seems to be: Yes I regret removing the monster because it had to do with the creation of ISIS of what I am partly responsible for, that in turn caused many Syrian refugees that we in Europe have not done enough about.

The heck! Is this just dire means to get back on stage and say whatever is necessary to do so?

I think Blair puts too much emphasis in himself. And maybe it is the guilt from the priests that is influencing him to give way to reason and logic again?

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

No not really, France as well as many other European countries were against invasion. And the so-called intelligence that claimed Saddam Hussein was a threat to other countries was mostly conjecture and misinformation.
He was allowing training of al Qaeda in his country.
That story was completely made up. SH was a brutal dictator but he was against AQ because they hated him too.
He was paying families who would sacrifice one of their children to be a suicide bomber to attack Americans. Did you all forget that one? He was funneling money to terrorists to attack our men in Afghanistan. Oh what a short memory some have......

I think that's stretching it considerably.

Baloney, all of it. Constant repetition of lies does not turn them into truth.

The only thing that can be truly agreed upon is that Saddam was a mean SoB whose removal can hardly be regretted.

Not even when the ensuing chaos is considered. A chaos, incidentally, that falls as much into the irresponsibility of the previous as of the current administration.

Re: 'I'm sorry': Historic moment Tony Blair FINALLY apologises for Iraq War and admit

I wonder if Hillary will apologize while on the campaign trail.

The Iraq war would have certainly happen if Hillary voted against the referendum and it didn't need to happen because she voted for it. The war rests squarely on GW Bush's shoulders with a boost from Cheney too. They are the ones who need to apologize the most.
