Jim Webb Mulls Running as Independent - NBC News

"Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb is considering running as an independent, his campaign announced Monday evening, and he plans to discuss his plans Tuesday at a press conference at the National Press Club Washington, D.C.

The former senator from Virginia has faced questions for being out of step with his party, including during the first Democratic presidential primary debate Tuesday night, when he complained repeatedly about how little time he was given to speak."

Interesting.

He's not really liked by the Democrat base, but he could garner a lot of support with moderates and independents.

This just in: Bernie Sanders to run as socialist.

Run Jim, run!

I'm with you. With Webb in the race it gives me an honest choice at the ballot box.

Shouldn't a candidate have more than a "Who?" factor, first?

If I were to vote for a democrat it would most likely be him, then Trump, in that order.

Conservative posters will still vote for the Republican candidate .

He'll go nowhere. As an indy he has to get ballot access in every state individually rather than on party who actually already had ballot access. All his resources will be wasted just trying to gain ballot access where deadlines are already approaching while all his competitors can just focus on campaigning.

He's well liked by the labor working class wing I think, the young activist type will not support him, nor will most minority groups, I think he's also too far to the left to be supported by a republican base. I don't see him working as an independent candidate except as a spoiler.

I like him and f he's still hanging on as a Democrat by the Washington primary, I will declare myself a Democrat vote for him

But let's be realistic he will never be president of United States

This.

I want him to stay on the democratic primary though, a strong showing third place would maybe convince the democrats to stop campaigning on divisive issues that could cost them important elections.

I don't think he will either, I think he has some other calculation for running independent. Maybe he hates the idea of Hilary and Bernie so much that he just wants to rain on their parade.

He can't play spoiler for Democrats, because there's little Blue Dog zones left in this country. I like Webb, but I wouldn't throw my vote for a third party pick.

Webb seemed like the only sane one among the Dems. He'll never win the nomination though. Hillary has had that secure since she lost in 2008.

It might actually be impossible for him to get on the ballot in all 50 states. Americans Elect was only able to get on the ballot in 29 states in 2012 and they had unlimited funding. Ballot access is ridiculous nowadays

Obviously the people who want him to run would be Republicans who believe Webb can take some votes away from the Democratic ticket in border states that would tip the state to the Republicans. They would use him as toilet tissue for their own convenience.

So a member of the party perhaps wants to run as an independent and an independent is running for the Democrat nomination. Weird.

A third party candidate is unlikely to get significant support from anyone in most cases.

I will say this....

Should Bernie Sanders get nominated by the Democrats and Donald Trump get nominated by the Republicans, I think that is the one situation where a "Reagan/Southern/Blue Dog Democrat" type of 3rd party independent could make a little more noise than usual. I don't think he'd have any real chance of winning, but I think in such a polarizing situation at that, he'd be well positioned to exceed what the typical 3rd party endeavor receives.

Those blue dog zones are to be found in the swing states, though.

LOL....are you serious? Desperate is more the word. Jim Webb wouldn't alter the election one little bit.

I know virutally nothing about Jim Webb, aside from the fact he came across like a spoiled child in the first debate, constantly whining about how much time he had to speak. It was a huge turn off.

Was absolutely a poor showing on his part. I didn't mind it once, but it began to become far too common of a refrain from him. Combine that with the fact he basically was getting no response from the Democratic crowd and it was a very poor showing for him.

Exactly how I felt. I understand letting the frustration out once, I believe Ben Carson did the same in the first Republican debate and I didn't mind it much, but Webb did it over and over again. And he didn't just say it and move on, he wasted lots of time whining about it.

It was not a good look.

It's no secret Webb has been at odds with his party since he was elected senator. They cringe when he often quotes Reagan. :) I would call him a blue dog that use to be the norm for the Democratic party before the fringe left took over and tried to neuter all the blue dogs.

How anyone could, would, should, consider the cackle, or any loudmouthy entitled grand stander, instead this sincere man, is beyond my understanding.

He is a lot like Ron Paul in his presentation. Both have a lot to say, but can't make their point in a dialed down version.
But I rather take my time and listen to the likes of them than the attention whores on both sides, namely Clinton and Trump. They both are quick on the trigger, have the street smarts to come up with some spontaneous snark. But we have to ask ourselves if that is what counts.
