Prosecutor slammed for Hispanic bias comment

Oldham County Attorney John K. Carter is being criticized for saying in open court Wednesday that being Hispanic is reason enough for a motorist to be pulled over by police in his jurisdiction.
(. . .)
The case involves Mauro Martinez, who was pulled over by Oldham County Police on July 25 for speeding.

Standing at the bench, Assistant County Attorney Travis Combs said the defense's "issue is he was stopped because he was Hispanic." In the court video recording obtained by The Courier-Journal, Carter, who was also standing at the bench, can be heard responding: "That's probable cause."

This guy should NOT be a prosecutor.

considering the fact that "hispanic" is not a race, I dont see anything in the article related to race. So why exactly are you ranting about racism?

Simply being Hispanic is not a probable cause to pull someone over. This guy needs to be let go.

Edit: to clarify, the prosecutor should be let go.

There's plenty of racism in modern day American. There are white racists and black racists and Asian racists and Native American racists.

Hispanic isn't a race.

I think sometimes racism is used when bigotry is probably the appropriate word.

Perhaps we should say instead it's an instance of being prejudice.

Yes it's just as wrong by the defense to defend his speeding by saying he was only pulled over for being Hispanic as much as it's wrong for the prosecution to say it's okay to do so.

I don't think anyone would argue with either of these statements. I was responding to the part where you said he should be let go. He was technically pulled over for speeding. The stupidity of the prosecutor shouldn't change that.

Agreed. But speeding is. I think he was speeding?

Yes, it looks that way.

My issue was with the county attorney's comment (Carter). If he said that....wow.

Now, if they are only pulling over Hispanic speeders, that is another issue...but I see no evidence for that.

I should have clarified that I meant the prosecutor should be let go due to his obvious bias.

nor should it change the fact that he was driving without a license

I think the prosecutor should be punished in some way.

That video is so chopped up between camera angles and microphones I can't tell who is saying what.

You would have to show some kind of connection between what the prosecutor said and what the officers are actually doing.

It might not be there.
