Sanders would ‘absolutely’ end NSA spying

I'll believe it when I see it. Obama made the same promise, but ended up expanding the program instead when he took office. Whoever is not in power may say a lot of things like Obama did, but don't come through once they are in power. Obama turned out to be Bush on steroids on this issue. And Hillary? She is going to love the spying program too when she takes office. Forget about 4th Amendment protections as long as 2 parties control our government.

Very well said. Obama has been quite a failure, especially on this issue.

Except for this - it was a failure on the part of the NSA being restricted in its capabilities that lead to us being caught off guard on 9/11 and lead to the deaths of thousands of US citizens...

Please post evidence. My understanding is that the FBI had plenty of evidence (the flying lessons and more) to justify further investigation but it was ignored.

But they do need a warrant already. All that is collected under the program under discussion is the numbers, times, and length. To get any further information requires a warrant.

That information is very revealing. If you disagree, post the part of your phone bill with that information in this thread to prove your sincerity. Phone users have a reasonable expectation of privacy. FISA courts are a farce.

Yup, and here is where Republicans are stupid. Instead of pushing conspiracy theories and fake scandals about Obama, if they pushed the truth instead, I would be more than happy to join them and call for Obama's impeachment. They they don't. Of course, the reason for that could be that THEY want that same power for themselves, just like the Democrats did when Bush began that program. The Democratic and Republican parties are both corrupt.

But if I post mine, that's not in isolation...that's attached to me. That information is only revealing IF AND ONLY IF further research on that particular number is done. And that cannot be done without a warrant. The only use of those records are if a foreign target contacts someone in the US. The US number can then be checked to see if it is in contact with other foreign targets. That's it. The analyst would have no idea who that US person is or anything about them or what they were talking about. If the person looks like he or she is involved with foreign bad guys, the FBI is informed and they can start an ivestigation.

And why do you think FISA courts are a farce?

They need a warrant, except when they say they don't need one!

Sanders would ‘absolutely’ end NSA spying | TheHill

Sen. Bernie Sanders would “absolutely” end sweeping surveillance powers at the National Security Agency, he said during the first Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday. Without going into detail about his intentions for the agency, the Vermont Independent, who identifies as a democratic socialist, trumpeted his status as one of the few congressional opponents of the Patriot Act in the wake of the 9/11.

At last there is something with which he and I agree.

So you're going to post your phone records to prove it the information is useless?

So he's going to "absolutely" end a program that doesn't do what he claims and is scheduled to end long before the election anyway. How bold.

Some of it is scheduled to end. Not all of it...

Again, post your phone data and we'll show you how much they can reveal.

The FISA courts are secret, the participants are secret, no one effectively represents the public's interest in information access or privacy, and the results are never made public. They have turned down a ridiculously low quantity of requests for surveillance. They have not deterred mass surveillance of our phone records. The courts are almost literally a farce, they are pro forma rituals done to create the appearance that they are complying with the law.

Oh look it's another one who hears Sandes call himself a socialist and thinks Cuba instead of Canada.

Canada is one of the 5 eyes. Regardless...
