It has been announced that there will be a meeting between Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and American President Obama: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/25/w...-announce-that-obama-and-putin-will-meet.html

Is it just possible that we could finally see a Russian-Amrican alliance to wipe out ISIS, in Syria, and everywhere else, too? I'm still new in this forum, so it would be interesting to see what your opinions are....

Looking at the mess with ISIS and Syria, not speaking to each other is not a viable course of action anymore. This is a good thing.

We ended up in Syria, after all, how fun.

It had touched my mind. The price seems too high though. It looks as if Putin has played our man into a corner out of which there is no way out that will not do us considerable harm.

It is not a question of "not speaking to each other". Putin has been playing a zero sum game and damaging the US and Europe badly. This was not because the EU, Nato or the US "were not speaking" with Russia. That would be a dangerously erroneous assumption to act upon.

Putin is feeling the heat between sanctions and collapsing energy prices. He's looking for a way out. Will bargin Crimea for boots on the ground in Syria to take out ISIS. Win for our interests. Tip of the hat to Obama.

I'm sure they'll have a meal together. Then Putin will literally eat Obama's lunch. Like just reach across the table and eat it. Just to drive home the symbolism of how Obama has been thoroughly punked in Syria.

That's why you get a plate of fries or onion rings for the table. So people don't gank yours.

No matter what happens in Syria it will be Putins fault. AT least thats how the world will view it.

That's what I do. If having lunch with a dick I order bbq slab of ribs plate of fries plate of onion rings. I'll get my fair share. Of course like Obama I'm not obese. Rush Limbaugh might not fair so well.

And if it works out, Putin has a beaten dog as his ally. Not a big loss for us.

The whole world is having a face to face meeting with Putin, not just Obama. Red lines have been drawn already by our bold leader...

BHO is a lame duck whereas Putin is negotiating from a position of strength.

Whatever is said in this conference won't be followed by either side.

Until the next POTUS, Putin has a free hand.

I really wouldn't view the link between Syria and Russia as a serious alliance, but rather a friendship of convenience.

I seriously propose that Russia, USA, the EU, and China put their differences aside and unite to establish direct contact with advanced alien human civilization who are watching us as we speak :aliens1:

Pretty much. I'm fine with Russia doing something to quell the violence in her own hemisphere. Russia wants to be a world player, they need to act like it, and that includes mopping up Assad's mess.

I think this is the wrong move at this point in time. I do not think we should be awarding the Russians the high profile of a meeting with the President, especially when nothing can, or will, be accomplished in the meeting.

Russia's been busy leveraging us. So I think ISIS and the Ukraine will probably be the topics of discussion, yes.

True. Putin is going to be looking out for Russia's interests above and beyond all else. Part of that is retaining the Russian Navy base at Tartus, Syria, which Russia has had from the early 1970's. Strength in the Eastern Mediterranean is vital to keeping access open through the Dardanelles and the Straits of Bosporus to the Black Sea, where Russia rules everything with its Black Sea Fleet, headquartered in Crimea.

No doubt about one thing, the Russians are in a strategic geographic position to bring a war-fighting effort to ISIS more efficiently than the U. S. can. But Russian "love" for Syria, Iran, or any other Middle East country, per se? No, I don't see that.

As an economic driver, I love the cold war, I really do. And I love the military. But unless Putin is pushing up on western Europe, it makes no sense to continually take a hard line against him. That said, how many billions have American corporations lost to Syrian instability?

Judging from history I would guess this meeting is about Putin offering something he never intends to give in return for riches Obama doesn't appropriately value.

The Russians know that Obama is completely on "autopilot" and "cruise-control" between now and the time we finally get rid of him at noon, on January 20, 2017. Anything that occurs during this meeting between Putin and Obama will have been worked out well in advance by Sergey Lavrov and John Kerry, but what can it be? Obviously, something that requires the theatrics of a face-to-face meeting between one dangerously intelligent, effective leader and a dunce-cap, empty suit who is obviously sick and tired of everything about the presidency.

Putin has two overarching geopolitical motives for his Syria ploy:

1) Threaten mischief in Syria as leverage to achieve his anti-EU/NATO strategic goals (federalization/dismemberment) in Ukraine.

2) Reintroduce Russian influence into a Middle East that the US under Obama has vacated.
