This whole "scandal" was invented by the american press to distract us from the Planned Parenthood scandal.

'What lion?' Zimbabweans ask, amid global Cecil circus | Reuters
july 30 2015 As social media exploded with outrage this week at the killing of Cecil the lion, the untimely passing of the celebrated predator at the hands of an American dentist went largely unnoticed in the animal's native Zimbabwe.

"What lion?" acting information minister Prisca Mupfumira asked in response to a request for comment about Cecil, who was at that moment topping global news bulletins and generating reams of abuse for his killer on websites in the United States and Europe.

For most people in the southern African nation, where unemployment tops 80 percent and the economy continues to feel the after-effects of billion percent hyperinflation a decade ago, the uproar had all the hallmarks of a 'First World Problem'.

"Are you saying that all this noise is about a dead lion? Lions are killed all the time in this country," said Tryphina Kaseke, a used-clothes hawker on the streets of Harare. "What is so special about this one?"

And thus a hashtag was born. #whatlion

So....the idea is that this news story was trumped up in order to gloss over the PP thingy currently going down. I have to ask, got proof? Does this not belong in the conspiracy theory sub forum? Everyone always claims that the news media is "in on it", but you know, I've quite a few friends in said news media, and not a peep has every come out of them about stuff like this...

It's good that the media is concentrating for once on something real, like the hunting of a species that's shortly to go extinct.

If conservation of African wildlife had been left exclusively to the Africans, there'd be no wildlife by now.

Simply by the measure of things that you see every day (and thus take for granted) not having much of a value to oneself. They'll sooner or later cease to be, like the plains buffalo and the wolf.

The premise with which the OP starts is pure baloney and really belongs in with the "9/11 was an inside job" crap.

Yeah the Zimbabweans were too busy watching the Planned Parenthood scandal to be worried about a lion...

One guy in the government didn't know about the lion, therefore nobody in Zimbabwe cares.

Meanwhile, in reality

Zimbabwe wants Cecil the lion’s killer extradited - The Washington Post
One has to wonder why the Zimbabwe government wasn't leading the charge for what amounts to a hunting licensing issue rather than following after the whoa is cecil crowd got their panties in a bunch.

The hunter killed a lion with a bow. That's pretty impressive to this non-hunter, and I applaud him on his prowess.

And what, my dear friend, will distract us from the scandal of the scandal which was designed to cover up the other scandal which as we all know was only meant to distract us from the true scandal! [you know the one]

Where's Nixon when you need him!

Well showing yourself to be a non-hunter was sufficient. No need to confirm it by your unwarranted admiration.

Not even close to extinct.

Well it is and the wildlife continues to exist.

Well, killing an apex predator with a bow does seem pretty good. I've never done it and, I suspect, most who belittle the accomplishment haven't either. Certainly not one as formidable as a lion, at least in NA.

Not even close to extinct.

If humans numbered at 34,000 while they were still being popularly hunted you would not say that. And if did say you believed that, then that statement would be a lie.

Further confirmation.

Its not about how bloody skillful it is, it's about how bloody unprofessional it is. The latter making it of course a case of total absence of hunting skill.

The fact that the animal died a prolonged and painful death may cause outrage with some, what bothers me more is the idiocy of creating a potential powder keg by this sort of stupidity. At least they went after the cat to finish the job but they were darn lucky that the cat wasn't so sufficiently ferocious as to finish them.

Since you're not a hunter I'll point out to you that hunting a lion with a bow is equal to driving your car at 100 mph with your hands off the steering. Into a curve. In which things are usually not so happily arranged that you kill only yourself.

Quite apart from not effecting, in this case, the fast and clean kill that reflects the hunters' pride.
