The killer of Cecil the lion that has been excoriated around the world in recent days may face Zimbabwean justice for his crime. Zimbabwe’s government has asked that Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota who has admitted to killing the animal, be returned to Africa to be tried. “We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he can be held accountable for his illegal action,” environment minister Oppah Muchinguri said on Friday.

Great news! We have an extradition treaty and he committed a felony. My only concern is that this might be a death sentence for him. I'd be cool with him paying $500K to $1M to buy his life and avoid jail if that goes to an anti poaching program.

They need to charge the guides not the person who thought they were acting legally.

He can be tried here in the US under appropriate federal law. We have provisions for this sort of thing.

As long as their court system isn't a sham, prisons aren't inhumane, and punishments are fair, see no reason he shouldn't be extradited and given his day in court.

Otherwise it shouldn't be granted, it still might be (because America), but shouldn't.

I'm not comfortable sending an American somewhere with a corrupt judicial system. But if we don't then we might as well scrap the treaty.

The Lacey Act (18 U.S.C. 42; 16 U.S.C. 3371-3378)

Looks to me like he can be charged with 2 felony counts under the Lacey Act; 1 count for illegally killing the animal, and a 2nd count for transporting it back to the US. Half million dollars and 10 years in prison, plus whatever restitution the US demands be paid to Zimbabwe.

And that should be the course of action I think. That way the fellow has a chance to show (or not) that he didn't know the lion was an illegal kill before he shot it. Considering he had "guides", he may be able to show he had no knowledge the lion was illegal until it was too late.

Regardless, he'll be found guilty of course.

Actually male lions are deadbeats and they even kill cubs from time to time to get the female to go into estrus again.

The female does most of the hunting and provides the meat.
