Many states exempt retired and off-duty police from GFZ restrictions.

So THAT'S why that retired chief shot and killed that guy over popcorn!!

I knew there was an explanation.
 
Generally I believe we are witnessing a rise in radicalized ideology in America. We can point to a multitude of factors when theorizing why people are reacting with violence- but I think with their has been tremendous progress over the millenia, and especially the past 20 years.
People are feeling threatened. They are watching their worldview trampled. Don't get me wrong here, I am all for many of the progressive moves that have been made, but many are not and I believe they cannot handle the changes.
'Old fashioned ideas' used to be moderately conservative. Today, we have people walking around who lived through times where the average citizens street banter could get them arrested if spoken today.
Things are changing and fast, and people aren't always as accepting or adaptive as they should be.
Cognitive dissonance, alongside the search for confirmation that ones ideals are right, true, and worth defending, it radicalizing people.

We have the same mental health issues we've always had. The only difference being, we're not dealing with it any longer.
