Iran-flagged ship targets U.S. Navy with laser

July 9, 2015

Washington (CNN)A U.S. Navy ship and helicopter were repeatedly targeted by a laser device on board an Iranian-flagged merchant ship beginning on Sunday in the Gulf of Aden, according to a U.S. defense official. No U.S. personnel were hurt or equipment damaged in the incidents which ended on Wednesday, the official said. The bridge area of the USS Forrest Sherman and one of its helicopters were targeted, the official said. The Navy is not certain exactly what the device was, or how powerful it was, but believes it was not of industrial or military grade quality since there was no damage. The incidents are viewed at this point as harassment from the Iranians. The incidents took place in international waters off the coast of Yemen. The Navy ship was "conducting routine maritime operations," the official said. But it is well understood that U.S Navy warships patrol the region looking for any indication of Iranian weapons smuggling into Yemen.

As another Vienna nuclear-deadline comes and goes, these clowns are painting US warships with laser designators.

It is only a matter of time before someone fires, Iran seems to want to just as much as the US does.

Yep, because of their superior firepower, the Iranian navy is just itching to get into a shooting match with the US.

As the naval warfare service branch of the Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces, it has traditionally been the smallest branch of the Iranian military and is tasked mainly with securing Iran's ports and coastline. Over time, the Iranian Navy has changed its mission to primarily anti-piracy...............

We haven't heard Iran's version. At any rate, nobody was hurt, no equipment damaged. ;)

Why should we care about Iran's version? It would not likely be the truth.

I know, because Iran always lies and the US always tells the truth. It's like being at recess in the third grade.

I missed the part where I said the U.S. always tells the truth.

And of course the US version will ?

Ever heard of a little thing called the Gulf Of Tonkin incident ?

People keep accusing me of saying things I didn't say. I didn't say a word about the U.S. version. Try to criticize me for what I say, not what you say.

Ok, so the US could be lying, but we know that Iran is.

We all know Montecresto's MO by now.

Why do you hate America?

The point is (as I've said a jillion times) we should ignore what politicians say and judge them by what they do. The reason is that they are not trustworthy. Governments are run by politicians so it isn't a big leap to apply the same comment to governments in general. Life really does become a lot simpler when we ignore what politicians say. Give it a shot.

Thank you for leaving no doubt which side you're on.

Well patronizing is easy, that's why we have so many. Glad to know that you're on the side that forms conclusions based upon one side of a story.

IOW, we should just ignore this story.

Yeah OS. :2wave: Iran has been eating some Wheaties lately. Seems they like to fire on cargo ships to.....even ones not in their waters.

Five Iranian boats fired shots across the bow of a Singapore flagged cargo vessel in the Persian Gulf on Thursday in an attempt to potentially stop the ship, a U.S. official told CNN. For the first time, the incident brought another Persian Gulf nation into the recent rising maritime tensions in the region.

The incident began when five small fast boats, believed to be manned by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy approached the cargo vessel just off the coast of the United Arab Emirates but in international water, the official said. These Iranian boats are typically manned with smaller caliber weapons such as machine guns.

The Iranian boats fired across the bow, and at that point the cargo vessel turned and escaped by entering into UAE territorial waters, according to initial U.S. military reports of the incident. The UAE sent three of its coast guard boats out to the cargo vessel. The incident began with the Iranians ordering the ship into Iranian waters. When the ships master refused, the Iranians began to fire in a way to try to disable the ship, not just as warning shots, the U.S. official said.....snip~

Of course, our Iranian Cheerleaders will soon fall back to blaming Buuuuuush Jr and Iraq.

Perhaps. If they painted our ship and we have painted theirs then we should ignore it. If they painted ours without our having painted theirs then it has some meaning. It is akin to rattling a sword. It makes me wonder if they think aggressive actions can intimidate the U.S. into giving them the withdrawal of sanctions they seek. It isn't logical but it is possible.

If it were not for the talks, I would warn them in the Security Council and sink the ship next time round without further ado.

They tried that with shooting down their civilian airliners back in 1988. Lockerbie six months later was their answer

Meh, why stop there. I would tell them if it happens again. I will remove a city off of their map for each time they act like they want to do something.

What can they do about it but whine and cry.

They shined a $10 laser at a ship and the navy pissed itself. Great.

I say let Trump start sounding off on the Iranians. Then they wont be the only ones doing the **** talkin.

Give those mopes something to think about.
