Saying South Carolina's history has forever changed, Gov. Nikki Haley signed a bill Thursday to relegate the Confederate flag to the state's "relic room," more than 50 years after the rebel banner began flying at the Statehouse to protest the civil rights movement.

Compelled to act by the slaughter of nine African-Americans at a church Bible study, Gov. Nikki Haley praised lawmakers for acknowledging that the long-celebrated symbol is too painful and divisive to keep promoting.

"The Confederate flag is coming off the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse," Haley said before signing the bill. "We will bring it down with dignity and we will make sure it is stored in its rightful place."

A governor whose parents are Indian, surrounded by blacks and whites, signing a bill to remove a symbol of hatred 50 years after it was put there by a government that had just 2 years earlier enforced segregation. Gay marriage is now legal in all 50 states and my Cuban wife just made me tamales. What a time to be alive.

And yet liberals all over the country still can't explain what difference this will make. Will depressed deprived people somehow not find symbols of hate to use to justify their hatred? Will they somehow stop using the Confederate flag to do it? Will anything really change at all? This has been something liberals have wanted to do for decades and not once in that time period have they convinced the south that their flag is about racism. The polls still to this very day in fact say that 57% of the population disagrees with them. I suppose however it fine to stand for democracy and ignore the people. Hell, with liberals it's just rhetoric. The people are what matters is what I'm told by them constantly, but I suppose ignoring them when it suits you is fine too. Funny how that works.

South Carolina has now joined other states in rebuking confederate ideology and all it includes. Don't like it? Move to Somalia.

And yet, South Carolina has removed the flag. That seems like a sign of progress.

That's nice. So?

You could have moved to Somalia instead of ignoring the people.

Oooh, sick comeback! So let me get this straight, legislators follow the procedures they established in order to remove the flag which is what your side has been arguing for a while, and you now the opinion of the people becomes important?

I thought you liberals cared what the people think on issues? Why do you forget it when it comes to certain issues? Is that something I'm not supposed to notice?

My mother took one look at my Filipina wife and said, "I wish you'd just married a black girl!" At the time, it was obvious that 'black' wasn't the exact word she wanted to say, but she was trying to be nice. In the town I grew up in (8 miles from where I grew up with my family in the MS Delta), I remember how in 1984 - twenty years after the Civil Rights Act - the only doctor in town still had separately-labeled entrances for whites and coloreds (yes, that is true). And to this day, what's left of my family in Mississippi still wonders where they went wrong, how I could possibly not see the world as they do, especially since I publicly support that Kenyan/Muslim/Socialist/Atheist/Communist/Nazi in the White House, y'know (and didja notice he's (gasp!) black????)

Yes, it is indeed a good time to be alive! It's been a pretty crappy day, but your post helped me to remember that things really are getting a lot better. Thanks!

If the problem was SC following the procedure to remove the flag, it has been done. The opinion of the people was irrelevant when it was put there, it remains irrelevant now that it has been removed.

Hey, can't I only care about the people sometimes too? I thought you guys were all about equal treatment and stuff.

Ask the millions of blacks who are still alive and remember very clearly what life under Jim Crow was like, what difference taking down that flag will make.

But I forget - this is you, and as far as I've seen, you automatically dismiss any answer someone gives you that doesn't agree with what you already believe.

Lol, you're trying too hard. The opinion of the people was entirely irrelevant to the procedure to place and remove the flag. Trying to inject into the conversation at this point is pretty pointless, don't you think?

I'm sure she didn't plan on it, but maybe it's time for Nikki Haley to join the Republican presidential race. She'll actually bring some dignity and class to the field.

I would love to see what change taking this flag down will have on their life in any sort of way.

Why does it have to make any difference? If you deny that it makes a difference, then there is no reason to fly it. If it does make a difference, then there is a reason to take it down.

You see the 9 pens she has laying on her desk? She took those 9 pens, and used each one to sign the bill, and then took those 9 pens and gave 1 pen to each of the 9 families affected by the shooting.

Class act, she is.

False choice fallacy....Instant losing argument...

Why did liberals lie and say this had to do with the shooting? Are people like myself supposed to be unaware that they were trying to get it removed for decades?

Where did I say that? Why did you not answer the question I asked?

He's not providing two strict choices. He's questioning what difference it makes to leave it up if it makes no difference to take it down. ;)

Yes, horrible liberals like Nikki Haley and Jeb Bush. In fact Bush removed the Confederate flag from the statehouse in Florida by executive order. Nobody voted on it.

False choice fallacy....Instant losing argument...

It is not a false choice, it is a very considered choice. If it does not matter, why is it so important to fly it? If it does matter, then there are good reasons not to fly it. You don't get to just label things false because you do not like them.

The matter was indeed concluded and done according to SC law as prescribed, and that is that. The outcome was as expected, though they managed to get that 2/3rds majority a lot quicker than I thought.

Anyway, back to matters that SC'inians actually care about...

NOW if they'll just get their asses in gear and do something about the gall-darned ROADS up here in the Upstate.... grrrr. If I bust one more tire in a pothole I'm sending the legislature the bill...

I'm sorry, but I appear to be lost on what the difference is.

The flag is coming down because a fair amount of the citizens see it as symbol of hate. Do you care about them?

Why? Democracy doesn't care about minority opinions.
