U.S. South Carolina House Approves Bill to Remove Confederate Flag

South Carolina House Approves Bill to Remove Confederate Flag - ABC News

The South Carolina House has approved a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds, and the flag could be removed within days.

The move early Thursday came after more than 13 hours of debate.

The House approved the Senate bill by more than a two-thirds margin. The bill now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, who supports the measure.

“Today, as the Senate did before them, the House of Representatives has served the State of South Carolina and her people with great dignity,” Haley said in a statement following the House vote. “I'm grateful for their service and their compassion. It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state.”

    It's about time.

Now that the procedures to remove the flag have been taken... and some can no longer use those procedures to ignore calls for taking down the flag, stay tuned for arguments whining about people being PC in 5... 4.... 3.... 2....

Hate and prejudice are emotions that will not be eliminated by the removal of a flag. How we handle these emotions is the answer. The realization these emotions exist in all people and that only our ability to control these emotions is the real solution to the problem. Maybe in a another 150 years we will work towards the real solution. Of course people probably said that when they were building the pyramids.

He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

It is a historical document and should be treated as such. Put it where it belongs, in a museum. It should be on a state or federal property.

Appropriate move, though they had little choice and there's no pat on the back to these guys. Georgia removed it fourteen years ago, without such intense pressure.

I doubt the majority of voters cared enough one way or the other to base their vote on that. I could be wrong.

Yay! The flag is gone! That means racism and violence will be gone...right?

Sure to most people outside the South it is a symbol of slavery, inbred hillbillies, Redneck hillbillies doing unrealistic stunts in a orange Dodge Charger, treason, only put it in the 1950s/60s in the south to intimidate civil rights groups and racism. However many Southerners see the Confederate battle flag a symbol of Southern pride and this could be viewed by those voters(those who are politically knowledgeable and those who are not politically knowledgeable) as their elected officials ****ting on that symbol of southern pride out of political cowardice. I could see this costing many of those elected officials their job. If this was at a federal level you would be right, the vast majority of voters have a short attention span and do not pay attention to politics. However it is not quite the same thing at the local level.
