GOP leaders fear damage to party’s image as Donald Trump doubles down

GOP leaders fear damage to party

The head of the Republican National Committee, responding to demands from increasingly worried party leaders, spent nearly an hour Wednesday on the phone with Donald Trump, urging the presidential candidate to tone down his inflammatory comments about immigration that have infuriated a key election constituency.

The call from Chairman Reince Priebus, described by donors and consultants briefed on the conversation and confirmed by the RNC, underscores t
he extent to which Trump has gone from an embarrassment to a cause for serious alarm among top Republicans in Washington and nationwide.

Trump loves $. He isn't (really?) this stupid is he? He is hurting his short-term profits, what is his long game here? Is he secretly trying to sabotage the GOP?

Trump is putting Republicans in a tough spot. If this forum is anything to go by, many people on the right sympathize with his comments. However, if you think Trump's statements are anywhere near being "right", you probably weren't going to vote for a Democrat in 2016. That said, Republicans are starting to become worried about the Hispanic vote. Trump doesn't have enough pull to convert people, however his comments can keep quite a few people away from the Republican party in 2016.

It will definitely be interesting watching the RNC pull this juggling act until Trump bows out. On one hand, borderline ****s like Coulter and Trump going after Hispanics, and on the other the RNCs push to make "inroads with Hispanics". Which will they pick? Who knows. I just know that what they do in the next year could very well determine how the Hispanic vote goes for the next 20-30 years.

He isn't stupid at all. He is straightforward. He speaks the truth as he sees it, unlike politicians. He says what he believes unlike politicians. His problem is not so much the content of what he says but rather the style with which he says it. He won't win any elections but he will get his message out.

Unfortunately, a meaningful percentage of illegal immigrants from Mexico are criminals or commit crimes and that percentage is enabled by the open border policy. That isn't opinion nor is it a slam against Mexicans or other latinos. It is simply fact and a plainly obvious one. But a lot of people don't want to hear it because they want votes after they engineer the "path to citizenship."

His "message" is one of a pig-ignorant, egocentric blowhard.

There is no doubt he is an egocentric blowhard. But the message is fact.

Maybe this will motivate the republican party to bust up the 2 party system...maybe Santa Clause is real.

I thought I would offer a translation of the quote Hatuey has below his posts because it is an appealing sentiment:

"Había una vez, un rey que se quedó sin castillo y un mendigo le dió abrigo, vino, pan y cama. El rey, le quizo pagar con un anillo y el mendigo dijo: Págame con una buena acción mañana. Hay quien comparte hasta su pobreza, lo material no le interesa y eso si que es tener riqueza."

Once upon a time there was a king who was away from his castle and a beggar gave him a coat, wine, bread and a bed. The king wanted to pay him with a ring and the beggar said "pay me by doing a good deed tomorrow." There are those who share despite their poverty. Material things don't interest them and that is true wealth.

This post, like Trump's blather, shows the problem with most anti-immigrant rhetoric- it is opinion being presented as fact. All through history a minority has been picked as the scapegoat for a nation's ills. From Armenians in Turkey to Jews in Germany, a people have been picked to be attacked. Sad thing is some very otherwise decent folks go along with the attacks.

Trump may speak what he thinks is true, (I can't help but see a cold blooded gambit being played) however so has every other demi-gawd, from Hitler to the guy on the street corner screaming the end is nigh! And for the record Trump is far more like the later than the former, He is no where near the public speaker Hitler was.

And Trump is still polling well. The racist leg of the GOP is wide, and runs deep.

In 2008 I was no fan of Obama, I hardly knew who he was. But after he got elected I thought, he might be a good change. It might be good to show the world how far we've come, and to have a different face in the WH. I was naive, I didn't realize how racist parts of this country are, just look at Trump's comments and how many Republicans are rallying around him. And you know they hate the black guy in the WH even more.

Correction. It is anti ILLEGAL immigration rhetoric. My comment was fact. Sorry. I'm not attacking anything but the open border policy. Don't mistake what I say with what you think I say. We live in a country of immigrants. Immigrants have made our country great. Illegal immigration, on the other hand, has created some problems. If you can't see that then we'll just disagree. You folks need to stop purposely confusing immigration with illegal immigration.
