S.C. Senate approves removal of Confederate flag

S.C. Senate approves removal of Confederate flag

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Senate on Tuesday formally approved a bill removing the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse grounds, where it has flown either atop the Capitol or on a nearby flagpole for 54 years.

The Senate, which had voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move Monday following hours of debate, sent the bill to the House. The bill could be taken up almost immediately -- or technical delays could push back the House debate as late as Friday.
In other news, Paramount Pictures has announced it will release a new version of Raiders of the Lost Ark in which all the swastikas are digitally removed.

I didn't know that Paramount Pictures was flying a swastika at the capital of a US state.

I approve of the removal of the flag. My comment was satire on how Hollywood seems to be completely removed from what the rest of the country is discussing, thus entirely missing the point. I believe the allegory of the cave could be applied here.

While I see the flag as potentially decisive, and certainly questionable flying over a state capital, I'm going to openly contradict myself and say that removal of the symbol just gives it even greater power and further cements it as a symbol that represents something that it was never meant to represent.

If the communities that find it offensive simply embraced the symbol as it's own, I think in the long run it would be a much better strategy than trying to erase it from history.

I think it's the right move, but even as a supporter of getting the confederate flag out-of-government, I'm pretty blown away with the speed at which the anti-flag sentiment is sweeping the country.

But then, things sometimes go like that: an issue festers until near critical mass is hit, then some catalyst event occurs, and BAM!

    For reference, N.B. France & the Colonies, in 1789 & 1776 respectively!

I'm not surprised at all. It was a magnificently crafted ruse by the president. You see, it had nothing to do with race actually, but madness, insanity, a growing issue in all the world and one we are all struggling to deal with, from the whacked out street person wielding a screw driver, to the guy who loses it and in the name of something, a dog, race, politics, misogyny goes ape **** and kills people.

There is no solution, especially in the US where anyone can have a gun. There is no solution to the gun issue, so, make it racism and in so doing focus the attention on an emblem, an inanimate object.....for the people, it is a safe place in which to aim their anger and fear, it requires no thinking and makes people feel better and that something is being done. I have asked this before, but anyone who thinks this will change anything, please state how many mass killings won't happen because this 150 year old emblem is removed from state houses?

I agree, it flying where the national flag should be is odd, and maybe a good idea, but in the wake of a tragedy we are only burying, until the next one, the issues that triggered the tragedy.

Me? I say its an emblem...emblems, even the swastica never killed anyone, what people make them represent is what terrorizes the world.

If I had a choice between taking down the flag or sane gun laws, I'd choose the sane gun laws. However, the flag coming down is a victory. And it is by no means hollow.

.... Well, I'm sure all of the people who were whining about leaving it up to the state congress will accept this quietly and without further questioning.
