Country’s First Gay Divorce Firm Opens In Philadelphia « CBS Philly

Philadelphia lawyer Conor Corcoran, who bills himself as the nation’s first gay divorce attorney, says he is ready to serve gays and lesbians that will need divorces following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week legalizing same-sex marriage across the country.

Corcoran says he celebrated the Supreme Court decision to have marriage equality throughout the United States, but he quickly realized it was unlikely all of the new marriages would end in bliss.

You see that, you gay dumb****s. I tried to warn you about getting married. Now the lawyers are after you. :lol:

Welcome to the United States of Litigation. :mrgreen:

Wait, isn't marriage laws the same for everyone now? If so why the need for specialist in "gay divorce". Will gay divorce lawyers refuse to take divorce cases between a man and women? Oh wait, that was a baker refusing to make a cake for a same sex couple.:mrgreen:

I have two initial thoughts here:

1) "Philadelphia lawyer Conor Corcoran, who bills himself as the nation’s first gay divorce attorney" - I don't believe it - I'll bet there are other American divorce lawyers who are gay but I do respect him for announcing to the nation that he's homosexual.

2) My first impression was that this is blatant bigotry and discrimination. Aren't there accommodation laws that state you can't advertise for business from one defined group? Suppose this lawyer advertised that he specialized in divorce for white people? I think the feds should open up a human rights investigation against this lawyer, even if he just outed himself.

I don't see how a gay divorce would be any different from a heterosexual one.

I do not get the issue with things like this. We all knew it would eventually happen, why should gay and lesbian marriages be held to a standard that "traditional marriages" cannot achieve. Now that Marriage Equality is around we should have expected someone out there to be ready for the probable results.

There is a percentage of people that get married, "traditional" or otherwise, who will ultimately get divorced for one reason or another, and odds are it will end up a matter for divorce attorneys to fight out. All the usual items will be under consideration. Handling issues related to children, division of marital assets, estate issues, lasting financial dependence, presentation to a judge on the merit for a divorce, various other costs, etc. It is all relevant, and all likely to occur.

We have no reason to assume otherwise that a law firm would eventually specialize in dealing with these matters for gays and lesbians. Why is this really a problem?

I agree - if I were 18 or 19 and thought about being a lawyer - I'd certainly see the broadening of divorce to now encompass gays and lesbians as a huge career opportunity.

Child custody for one. The issues that come up won't necessarily be unique, but might be more or less prevalent (e.g. cases where both are legally parents, but only one is a biological parent).

Also, it's generally the case that when men and women divorce, the mother gets primary custody unless there's a really good reason for it to go to the father. With gay couples, the court is forced to rely on facts rather than assumptions. If there's a carryover effect to heterosexuals, gay divorce might become the best thing in a long time for divorced heterosexual fathers who seek primary custody.

According to tbe Pope, there are legit reasons to divorce.
Wha?

There's annulment, which has similar results, but is not divorce.

Did something recently change?

When the LGBT community began to collectively demand the right to marry, my tongue-in-cheek response was:

+++

"Why should they not have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us"?

+++

And - now it has come to pass ...

Hah, I very much agree with you here.

But I expect matrimonial law would be amazingly emotionally draining - all that fighting & the ripping-up of families - Yish!

Accommodation laws only apply to specific groups. ;)

Oh boy, :roll:

From the article
The law office’s website says it is “proud to be the first law firm in the U.S. to practice in the field of gay divorce, providing Private Client Domestic Services, 24/7 and coast to coast, regardless of your sexual orientation.

Agreed. This needs to change anyway, it has not been, nor is it still, fair to men. So the new explorations into this legal aspect of child custody should benefit society in general.
