U.S., Cuba to announce embassy openings Wednesday

WASHINGTON The United States and Cuba will announce an agreement Wednesday to open embassies in each other's capitals, formally re-establish diplomatic relations for the first time since 1961, senior administration officials said Tuesday.President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerrywill make the announcement Wednesday morning, said the three officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to allow the president to make the formal announcement.
The United States and Cuba have been negotiating the move for more than a year, going public with their diplomatic efforts last December. Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro met personally in Panama in April.

Finally a rational foreign policy regarding Cuba. Hopefully the establishment of diplomatic relations and an end to the embargo will push Cuba towards democracy.

Wow, didn't believe I'd see this in my life time...

Democracy and capitalism incoming, I guess it's a win in that respect.

I do hope that Cuba keeps some aspects of their socialized economy; their healthcare system is one of the few examples of how a socialist country was able to implement a successful socialization of industry, and it would be a shame if a democratized Cuba scrapped public healthcare.

Oh yea, they should keep that, no argument there.

But, I will stand up clapping when capitalism engulfs that country and it can finally move on from its' little socialist dictatorship episode.

It's gonna be glorious as long as it doesn't devolve into some ultra neoliberal crap.

I think we will see a slow transition to a "socialism of the 21st century model", while allowing the implementation of small business and the opening up of more deregulated co-ops, while keeping much of their state ran enterprises in place in hopes more open trade can kickstart the state ran enterprises. I also think we will see more candidates running in elections as well (and we already have seen that).

Seeing and being in Havana is on my bucket list. It's been described as the most beautiful location on earth. It looks like I'll get a chance to visit there after all.
