US now has more Spanish speakers than Spain

The United States is now the world’s second largest Spanish-speaking country after Mexico, according to a new study published by the prestigious Instituto Cervantes.

The report says there are 41 million native Spanish speakers in the US plus a further 11.6 million who are bilingual, mainly the children of Spanish-speaking immigrants. This puts the US ahead of Colombia (48 million) and Spain (46 million) and second only to Mexico (121 million).

Wonderful news! This really is becoming a multicultural country like never before. Time to teach yourselves and your kids Spanish...

FYI this study doesn't even include Puerto Rico... which is a US commonwealth.

That should make doing business in Spain easier.

Oh my god no! Not SPANISH! That is a sure sign of the apocalypse!

And in other meaningless news, there are more English speaking 'Mericans than the entire population of England. Over 300 million English speakers in 'Merica vs a total English population of 53 million...

Another way of looking at this is 'Merica has roughly 10% of the World's spanish speakers.

ORRRR 'Merica has a population many times larger than most European 'mother' countries so this 'new' news isn't much but baiting the usual 'nativist' ranters.... :peace

How is it baiting to report the news? It's a big deal that the United States has now passed Spain and Colombia to become the second largest spanish speaking nation on earth. It shows how we are changing as a country.

In case you're forgetting, they speak Spanish in Latin America as well. So that's a lot of countries we are ahead of.

Your reaction is puzzling.

Sure... Spain, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, you name it. There's a whole lot of cool places in the Americas to explore as well as Spain... Spanish is an incredibly useful language.

It is race baiting by the way a few facts are drummed on and the usual suspects rising to titter about it... YOUR reaction isn't puzzling at all... ;)

We long passed England and yet no 'news' report about that.

'Merica is the biggest to second biggest in so many categories, mainly due to our huge size- the number of Spanish speakers is still a minority compared to English speakers. Personally I don't see this as worthy of being noticed at all.

'Merica has 10% of the world's spanish speakers, THAT is compared to over half the of the primary English speakers of the world being 'Mericans.

Take a deep breath and realize the population of Spain and Columbia is a tiny fraction of the massive population of the good ol USofA so beating them isn't much more than a shrug to most of us... :peace

Good. Americans need to learn a second language and Spanish is a good choice for it.

A few facts are drummed on? Dude, I cut and pasted the first two paragraphs of the article. The article is from the UK based pulizer prize winning newspaper "The Guardian," I doubt they race-bate or that they have any skin in the game.

Relax bro, it's a newspaper article.

Personally, im all for whatever policy helps industrialists ship cheap labor unfettered by borders worldwide. So, i say "hola amigos/amigas."

Doesn't surprise me. The Spanish settled plenty of this country, almost as much as the English did. Also there is evidence to indicate that the Spanish settled in the Appalachian mountains long before John Smith and crew ever came on the scene

If you're referring to men and women you only say amigos, Spanish is a very.... Male centric language. Female pronouns are only used when the defining article is completely female, they don't have the gender egalitarianism yet in espanol

what "race" are spanish speakers?

Good. Americans need to learn a second language and Spanish is a good choice for it.

Why? Seems like Chinese, Japanese or German would be much more beneficial

Clearly ripped from the Drudgereport...... imagine that, a country of 320+ million having quite a few Spanish speakers. When you find on of 'em with a Koran, the American dream will be over...........

Is it just me, or has the drudgereport become like "newsmax" and a bit more "silly right" these past few years? It used to be a great aggregation site that broke interesting (and spiked) stories - now it seems to pander to the silliest elements of the far right. Similar things going on at Breitbart, which has become almost laughable in the past 3 years.

These days, I have to fix my monocle on the WSJ to get any news American of real merit and passable editorial standard

Chinese or Spanish are the ones to go for with Chinese maybe taking first seat as fewer Americans speak it. The competitive advantage might therefore be greater. On the other hand only China and Formosa speak it.

why is spanish a good language second to learn?

I buy lots of things from all three countries - those transactions are done in English, and perhaps less than .00001% of Americans will even be in a position to do business directly with agents from those countries requiring native language proficiency. And there is that whole "shared border" thing you can't get around, no matter how many silly fences you build.........

Also, learning Chinese or Japanese is astonishingly difficult, and if anyone has nativist difficulties with Mexican culture, the practices and customs of the Far East will be something incomprehensible by contrast and would send many people into a Hank-Williams cocoon they would not soon emerge from.

Swallow your pride and have your kids learn Spanish. Useful language, especially in South Texas, and it will only get more useful as the years go on.

Not really that useful

I took Spanish in HS. Don't remember much.

If you come to my country, learn English. I would do the same if I moved to yours.
