There is nothing wrong with the common practice of asking a candidate if they can do the job...all the job...and not inquiring why. If the interviewer likes the person enough and the organization or business owner's guidelines allow it, they can indeed make reasonable accommodations.

But because there are so many things that employers are legally not allowed to ask, HR depts have developed their own strategies to elicit or discover information.
HR is tough, you have to constantly be on top of every new law, I have my SPHR, but I left my HR Director days behind, sick of firing people and investigating people and breaking up what are usually High School fights, and watching bad ethics from the top brass. What I do now is related to HR, but it is highly specialized and there aren't many of us with the skills, so its a good market

You're really on a roll today. I mean, just think of all the money that could be saved in potential harrassment claims, maintaining separate restroom facilities, health insurance, maternity leave, etc. if we just hire men for these positions (especially today when there's lots of people in need of work).

That takes care of women and zealots... surely there are more groups that aren't worth the added expense.

I changed my religion not long after I was hired. After a lot of thought and soul-searching I've come to realize that I simply can't continue issuing licenses. I didn't think it would be a problem, but issuing these licenses is causing a lot of emotional distress due to my beliefs and I simply can't do it any longer...

Oops! I forgot that it's only cute when the employer plays these little games.
