Re: Texas AG Says Workers Can Refuse Marriage Licenses to Gays

I knew this would come. I am not surprised it comes from Texas. Telling employees they need not give a license leaves the AG and the state libel in every way. I think this protest is foolish as it won't come to anything except lawsuits and lawyers in Texas all buying new Mercedes. SCOTUS will not like this.
The flame that is between us could set every soul on fire. I would love to take that heat and let's fill the whole world with desire.

The article also states "He warned in a statement Sunday that any clerk, justice of the peace or other administrator who declines to issue a license to a same-sex couple could face litigation or a fine."

It goes on to state that if this happens he has a group of lawyers who will represent the state worker for free. While Texas courts MIGHT rule in favor of the defendant's, I wonder how effective this would be when the U.S. Attorney General's office begins proceedings in Federal Courts under civil rights violations...the same method used to break the racial codes in the old South during the civil rights movement.

I am amazed at the levels of hate demonstrated by people over a ruling that has absolutely NO EFFECT on the "sanctity" of their own marriages. No one's rights have been violated, and no religion is required to sanction marital ceremonies. All that has happened is that an oppressed minority has had another level of oppression removed from their inherent liberties.
If I stop responding it doesn't mean I've conceded the point or agree with you. It only means I've made my point and I don't mind you having the last word. Please wait a few minutes before "quoting" me. I often correct errors for a minute or two after I post before the final product is ready.

You need to change that moniker to something else. While you might be right wing you are no libertarian.

For correctly stating that the Supreme Court has overstepped the limits of the Constitution and created a new right from wholecloth, then incorporated it against the states? Again?

That has nothing to do with political "lean." That's just evidence of the poster in question not being stupid.

Maybe we will see federal troops enforcing the law like in Alabama during the Wallace debacle. I imagine Texas, like Alabama will fold like a house of cards should this occur.

A legal truism that was never meant to be a catch-all for the Supreme Court bypassing the amendment process? It's fine as written. The way it has been abused is beyond reason.

If the federal government didn't issue tax benefits and next-of-kin benefits along with other federal benefits to married couples then you'd be correct. It's easier to just legalize all marriages across the nation than remove all the federal cookies that married people get.

No less than 14 times SCOTUS has determined marriage to be a right. And now 15 times.
