A certain number of people latch onto radical Islam because they are desperately looking for a cause. Once latched on, they become willing to engage in terrorism while having very little understanding of what they are committing terrorism for. The cause is not important, rather it is the sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves.
We have had a certain number of poorly educated radicals here. Most are converts. In past instances, they have evidently horribly mispelled arabic in their jihad threat letters, confused the Koran for the Hadith when quoting material, referred to Afghanistan was an Arab nation, and threatned to attack parts of Turkey during a police interrogation (got confused as to where Israel is on a map).
