    Wal-Mart removing Confederate flag items from stores, online

    Wal-Mart removing Confederate flag items from stores, online | Reading Eagle - MONEY

    The announcement by the world's biggest retailer comes as the shooting deaths of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., have reignited the debate over the flag's symbolism. The white suspect in the shooting, Dylann Storm Roof, appeared in photos holding the banner.

    <snip>

    "We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the Confederate flag from our assortment whether in our stores or on our website," the company said. "We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandise we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly this is one of those instances."

    Umm, good for you to make this decision finally, but I'm not so sure I believe the bolded end statement.

    This isn't a moral, social, racial or ethical decision - this is a monetary decision.
    I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on whats being proposed here, hed agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute. - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

    Put more bluntly: "Our decision making process can fail and in this case it failed."

    I'm pretty sure walmart will rake in the profits, confederate flag gear or not. That is the power of a transnational with many local quasi-monopolies.

    Walmart's profit margin is no higher than any other retail big box store. Quite low, actually. And what's a "quasi-monopoly"? Is it like Quasimodo?

    Which is why all big box retailers are still in business.... Oh wait...

    Quite low, actually.
    Low enough to stay in business... year after year. Hint, you win with volume at their size.

    In countless small towns walmart emerges as the sole provider of most of the goods and services they sell (within a reasonable driving distance, anyways). They don't start out that way, to be fair.

    I've heard this claim time and time again from the Walmart haters, though I've never actually witnessed it. Every Walmart I have ever been to is surrounded by stores of all kinds, and within driving distance of many competitors. It's an urban legend.

    No, it's well documented.
