I'll try one more time. It's low probability events, starting global wars to try to deal with ideology cannot result in victory and will only exacerbate the situation, as our current War on Terror has done.
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

We did not start it. It was brought to us.

What reason would they have to attack us if we stand down and withdraw to our borders?

    Our existence threatens them.

Two hundred years ago their own society had not yet suffered the centuries of decay and poverty that are driving their hate.

Ah the old "they hate us for our freedom" schtick. Probably the silliest conspiracy theory of all time.

You may not have paid attention to the young supporters of Paul, or their placards that pointed out Reagan's support of the Mujahhideen in Afghanistan which morphed into the Taliban that we might be able to then fight decades latter. And his support of Iraq in its war against Iran. They were all too aware of Bush 1's instigation of Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and Clinton's bombing raids on Baghdad. The youth are most certainly not any more ignorant of history then the old folks that have learned no lessons and still support one war after the other in what is decades of failed policy in the Middle East. But their is an ulterior motive to the spoken.

People say we're not fighting for oil. Of course we are. They talk about America's national interest. What the hell do you think they're talking about? We're not there for figs.

    Chuck Hagel, 2007!!!!!!
That's fine, I am glad they understand some type of history at least, but its being twisted, revised and taken out of context of the time. Every intervention the US was involved in in the ME had a corresponding intervention by the USSR. If the USSR had won the cold war, we would be talking about how the USSR is the evil empire, while the US would be bankrupt and in financial ruin. AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!!!! When people start putting the blame on the US for what is happening in the ME, it is clear, that they don't understand history and why we were in the ME. And the importance of the ME during the Cold war. Why the ME was so important to cold war strategy. People who argue that the US created terrorism, and that all the troubles of the ME are because of the US are just simply ignorant of the Cold war and the importance of the ME during the Cold war and where we would be if we had not beaten the USSR in our influence of the ME.

    - There was never a good war, or a bad peace.
    - Idealistically, everything should work as you planed it to. Realistically, it depends on how idealistic you are as to the measure of success.
    - Better to be a pessimist before, and an optimist afterwords.
