So your premise is that not only the intelligence committee, but the FBI (both of which know more than you) are pretending here.

There is hyperbole involved here-but its from you.

You're not saying that due to more threats than before, it wouldn't constitute a higher level of threat, are you?

In the end I don't think this will be the Highest Level we will ever face.

I say again Jack, WE invaded Vietnam, not the other way around.

I lived through Vietnam and it has nothing to do with our current conflicts.

Meh, it is a low probability event. Trillions of dollars, thousands of American lives aren't really going to do anything about it. Other then give the government excuse to expand its powers and deficit.
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

I'll try one more time. We could stand down all our personnel and every weapon. Our enemies will continue to attack. The duration of The Long War is not our option.

and is that part of our job as a world leader? to protect those that cant protect themselves?

i think that is the new question for a lot of americans

do we continue to be the policing force of the world?

or do we just take care of ourselves?

and what dangers lurk from both responses?

That is an awful lot of questions. I don't know the answers. Back in the day people were asking questions about the war as it was increased, but those questions were not answered by the government. Indeed, when Daniel Ellsberg stole the Pentagon Papers, it turned out that the government had been deceiving the public for the entire time.

So, I don't see much difference between now and then, except we have an entire globe full of angry arabs who hate our guts for having destroyed their countries and killed their people. Not rocket science--people don't like to be invaded by foreigners. I am not surprised that an angry arab took an AK to the beach in Tunisia.

The behavior is identical, is my only point.
