Gunn: Confederate part of state flag 'needs to be removed'

Well, you should have no pride in your knowledge of American History, thats for sure.

The " Stars and Stripes ", the flag of the North flew for over 80 years while Slavery was legal.

In fact, Lincoln didn't emancipate the slaves until 1863. Two years before the war ended.

And he wasn't emancipating slaves in rhe South either.

So the North only seemed to have an issue with slavery when the South chose to secede.

I wonder if the British flag should be removed from all Government buildings in the UK ?

Because that flag flew on many of the Slave ships that fereried over slaves to the new world.

Spain and Portuguese ships also ferried slaves over. Such historical hatred and evil locked up in those flags, right ?

You keep repeating the same wrong southern excuses for slavery and the civil war over and over. Please stop.

And neither did the Confederate Battle Flag.

I guess you're right. It represented the army that was fighting for the Confederacy's right to own slaves. Quite the difference.

God damn. A fellow has to have a Phd in history, for crissakes, just to have a conversation around here. Sheeeesh........

No, it's just that some folks here expect you to do their homework so they can shoot you down with what ever lie they were taught in school.

A Facebook page has sprung up looking for support to bring back Mississippi's Magnolia flag, which was the official state flag from 1861 until the "skalawags" and "carpetbaggers" were sent packin' and the current flag was adopted at the dawn of the shameful Jim Crow period in 1894. As a Mississippian, I fully support this. It's actually a pretty nice flag.

Mississippians for the Magnolia Flag

So silly...

The Stars and Stripes, the Flag of the North flew for over 80 years while Slavery was legal.

Allot longer than the Flag that representer the South, which wasn't the Confederate battle flag.

The North never had an issue with slavery until the South wanted to secede from the Union.

The average Confederate soldier didn't go off and risk his life to keep slavery legal. They were typically poor working class farmers who couldnt afford a slave if the wanted one.

Slaves were used by the Rich both North and South.

The Confederate flag isn't a flag of the country. It's a flag that was used in the Civil War only, and by the KKK afterwards. The reason it was removed from the SC Capitol is that it was offensive to some of the citizens, for obvious reasons. It's a flag that is often used by supremacy groups and racists, so it has that history (and current use). That's a legit reason. As the guv said, the flag at the Capitol is supposed to represent ALL the citizens of SC.

BTW...you didn't have to be rich to own a slave. It was similar to buying a horse. That's really how it was. You would buy what you could afford.

The U.S. Flag is a flag of the country. The Stars and Stripes has since its beginnings always represented the country, not just a few states who tried to secede from the country.

I am baffled why some citizens of the country and some states want to use a symbol that represents something horrendous in our past and which represents slavery and oppression of ancestors of some of our co-citizens, and which some of our co-citizens find very offensive because of that. People were murdered with Confederate flags around them. It's an ugly past. Time to put that to rest. It's not the right thing to do.

Individuals can still use the flag, though. It lets everyone know where their head is at and serves as a warning to decent citizens.
